Jim Belushi & Cannabis: Chasing the Magic

Jim Belushi and the Pursuit of Cannabis “Magic”
During a recent Zoom conversation, Jim Belushi didn’t appear to be under the influence of marijuana. He was enjoying a cigar, yet remained cheerful and expressive.
“My brother’s likeness is featured on the packaging. I’ve established the Blues Brothers brand. Consequently, the quality must be exceptional,” Belushi remarked.
A Growing Operation
Belushi discussed his cannabis products, specifically the 0.7 gram pre-rolls he offers – a convenient size for the current climate where sharing smoking materials is often discouraged. He initiated his cultivation with 48 plants in 2015.
Now, after six years and navigating a pandemic, his four technologically advanced greenhouses situated along the Rogue River in southern Oregon each house 200 plants.
“I am perpetually in search of something extraordinary,” Belushi stated.
The discussion centered on his new greenhouses, partially supplied by GrowGeneration, but Belushi consistently emphasized the advantages of cannabis.
More Than Just a Brand
“Cannabis provides a unique experience when I perform as the Blues Brothers,” he explained. “I seek that same feeling on a film set while acting, and when I sing. I’m constantly pursuing that magic, and I’m dedicating myself to this cannabis venture because it holds that potential.”
Belushi is part of a growing trend of celebrities actively engaging with the cannabis industry, and he embraces this involvement openly.
A Dedicated Cannabis Farmer
His social media presence reflects this commitment. Belushi’s Twitter handle is “Cannabis Farmer: Jim Belushi.” His TikTok and Instagram accounts feature frequent updates from his farm.
He even stars in a Discovery Channel series documenting his farm: “Growing Belushi.”
Cannabis currently dominates Belushi’s life. He recently declined a movie role due to scheduling conflicts with the fall harvest.
His agent expressed disapproval, reminding Belushi that he represents actors, not farmers. However, Belushi believes cannabis farming is now more important than acting.
Hands-On Approach
“I consider myself a blend of Elmer Fudd and Bill Murray,” Belushi confessed. Similar to Murray’s character in “Caddyshack,” he possesses a level of skill that makes him uniquely effective.
He has spent over 200 days on the farm in the past year. This hands-on involvement, in his view, distinguishes his operation from other celebrity-backed cannabis ventures.
Growing cannabis is not merely a branding exercise for Belushi. He is demonstrably invested, not simply leveraging his reputation for financial gain; he actively works the land and oversees the cultivation of his product.
“I am directly involved with the soil,” he said, detailing his work ensuring proper pH levels and temperature control. He personally handles the curing, scent evaluation, testing, and tasting of his crops.
“My name, and my brother’s name, are associated with this, and I’m not simply putting it out there,” Belushi affirmed. “I am genuinely farming, and I thoroughly enjoy this profession.”
Supporting Natural Processes in CultivationSimilar to numerous other growers, Jim Belushi implemented technological solutions to manage pests and enhance crop production. A specialist team from GrowGeneration provided his farm with the necessary equipment to lessen pest issues and elevate product quality. He notes that cannabis previously sold for $1,000 per pound is now fetching $2,200 per pound, attributing this increase significantly to the upgraded growing infrastructure.
Jeremy Corrao, the VP of Commercial Operations at GrowGeneration, asserts that the cannabis sector is benefiting from a variety of innovative technologies. These advancements allow operators to realize a quicker return on their capital investments. He specifically highlights advancements in lighting technology as a prime example.
“We are observing a considerable shift as individuals transition from energy-inefficient systems to those that conserve energy,” Corrao stated. He also acknowledged that some within the industry remain skeptical regarding the adoption of new technologies. However, he emphasizes that these technologies are reducing production costs and boosting overall ROI.
Corrao further explained that established practices and methodologies common in broader agriculture are now being integrated into cannabis cultivation, as seen with Belushi’s operation.
Despite utilizing modern greenhouses equipped with automated systems, certain cultivators, including Jim Belushi, continue to leverage natural resources.
Belushi emphasized the advantages of his farm’s location in Southern Oregon, which enjoys 192 days of sunshine annually. His new greenhouses are designed to harness the Oregon sun while still providing localized climate regulation and pest control. This approach allows for four growth cycles each year, representing a hybrid strategy that avoids a completely enclosed climate system in favor of one tailored to his specific needs.

Beyond Just a Brand Name
As cannabis legalization becomes increasingly widespread, cultivators are continually seeking advantages in a more competitive market. This includes focusing on superior soil quality, accelerated harvest times, and innovative strains, all while leveraging the recognition of established names like Belushi.
“Was the Belushi name previously linked to cannabis?” I inquired of Jim. My thoughts drifted back to his late brother, John Belushi, the energetic and genuine star of the 1970s and 80s. Substances were frequently consumed during that era, and John Belushi was a prominent figure in the comedy scene of the time.
After a moment of reflection, Jim responded, “Not specifically cannabis, but certainly associated with having fun.” He credits his brother John with initiating the Belushi brand back in 1975. For Jim, the brand embodies “the intention of bringing joy to people through humor and entertainment.”
The brands originating from Belushi’s Farm – Blues Brothers, Belushi’s Secret Stash, and Captain Jack (named after a legendary early Saturday Night Live marijuana supplier) – each reflect Jim Belushi’s vision for his family name. The product line generally avoids extremely high THC levels, often referred to as “gas,” but still delivers noteworthy qualities. This is a deliberate choice.
“My focus is on crafting exceptional terpene and THC blends,” Belushi explained, “aiming to produce a more therapeutic effect that supports a person’s well-being.” He jokingly added that he has a few strains he hasn’t dared to try, admitting to being apprehensive about their potency. He also avoids sampling the excessively potent strains offered by some other celebrity brands.
I questioned him about the appeal and newsworthiness of celebrity-backed cannabis brands. Belushi is not alone in this venture. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg recently introduced Houseplant in the U.S., featuring both dried flower and related accessories. Jay-Z’s Monogram offers a premium cannabis experience, and even Martha Stewart is involved, primarily with CBD gummies.
Belushi is reluctant to directly compare his offerings to those of his celebrity counterparts – likely due to his strong identification as a grower – but acknowledges that Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson’s pioneering celebrity cannabis brands paved the way for him and others.
The Ineffectiveness of Drug Prohibition
The regulatory landscape surrounding cannabis is undergoing rapid transformation. With an increasing number of states moving towards decriminalization and regulated cannabis markets, various sectors within the industry are directing their attention towards potential federal adjustments to cannabis-related policies.
For Jim Belushi, improved access to conventional banking services would represent a significant benefit, both for his own ventures and for the wider industry. Such changes may be imminent: recently, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a banking bill garnering substantial support from both sides of the political spectrum.
“The current period is exceptionally promising for the cannabis sector,” Belushi stated. “Observations have been made regarding positive changes in individuals who utilize cannabis. Instances of tumor reduction, cessation of seizures, improved sleep patterns, and overall well-being are becoming more frequent. It’s noteworthy that regardless of political affiliation or age, most people know someone who has experienced significant suffering.”
Belushi firmly believes that “Cannabis does not function as an entry point to more harmful substances; rather, it offers a route towards improved health and recovery.”
Despite this, a considerable number of individuals remain incarcerated due to the consequences of this historically flawed approach to drug policy. Belushi is actively involved in addressing this issue as well.
“Their release must be prioritized,” Belushi emphasized when discussing the objectives of the Last Prisoner Project. He is referring to individuals currently serving sentences for cannabis-related offenses. For Belushi, who supports the cannabis advocacy organization, this represents a crucial undertaking.
“A redirection of focus towards genuine justice is essential,” Belushi expressed with considerable conviction. “Consider the Last Prisoner Project; it serves as a potent indication that the war on drugs has failed. It is concluded. The damage is done. The war on drugs has been devastating, particularly impacting Black and brown communities.”
“I would rather not delve into that topic,” Belushi remarked, accompanied by laughter and a calming tone.
Founded in 2019 by Steve DeAngelo, the Last Prisoner Project champions cannabis criminal justice reform. The organization comprises activists, legal professionals, advocates, and others, including Belushi, who serves as an advisor. He clearly holds Steve DeAngelo, the founder and leader of the Last Prisoner Project, in high regard. “Steve DeAngelo is arguably the most resourceful individual globally,” he commented. “His unwavering dedication is truly inspiring.”
Belushi notes that the project is currently experiencing positive momentum, with an increasing number of state attorneys general responding to their appeals. However, ongoing support is still needed, he explains. The project consistently requires financial resources, as much of its work is performed on a pro bono basis. Furthermore, there is a continuous demand for individuals to contribute by writing letters and signing petitions – all of which are easily accessible on the project’s website.
“It would also be beneficial if companies within the cannabis industry would offer employment opportunities to those who have been released from incarceration,” Belushi suggested, urging the industry to actively support “these men and women who have spent considerable time imprisoned.”
He isn’t merely proposing this as a suggestion for others; he is actively engaged in fundraising efforts. The Blues Brothers are organizing a fundraising event at MJ Unpacked this October in Las Vegas. Belushi, the actor, comedian, cannabis cultivator, and member of the Blues Brothers, expressed enthusiasm as he discussed performing to benefit the Last Prisoner Project.
“We are planning a large celebration,” he said, “and we anticipate raising substantial funds as well.”
Ultimately, everyone deserves to experience connection and support.
