Map Network Drives with Group Policy on Windows

Automating Network Drive Mapping with Group Policy
Assigning network drives is a frequently performed task for system administrators. Traditionally, this was often accomplished through custom scripting. However, a built-in Group Policy setting offers a more streamlined solution, eliminating the need for manual scripting.
Simplifying Drive Mapping
Utilizing Group Policy for drive mapping significantly reduces administrative overhead. Instead of creating and maintaining scripts, administrators can leverage existing infrastructure.
It’s important to recognize that this guidance is part of a larger educational series focused on fundamental IT administration principles. The applicability of this technique may vary depending on specific network environments.
Benefits of Using Group Policy
- Reduced scripting complexity.
- Centralized management of drive assignments.
- Improved consistency across the network.
- Simplified troubleshooting.
By employing Group Policy, network administrators can efficiently and reliably map network drives for users, enhancing productivity and simplifying network management.
Utilizing Group Policy for Network Drive Mapping
Initiate the Group Policy Management Console by locating it through the Start Menu search function.

Navigate through your domain structure to the Machines object. From there, a right-click will reveal an option to Create a GPO.
It’s important to note that while an OU labeled "Machines" may be used as an example, it often contains user accounts as well. Since the drive mapping functionality operates as a User setting, it’s applied during user logon. Therefore, the Organizational Unit (OU) to which the GPO is linked should primarily contain Users.

A descriptive name should be assigned to the new policy. In this instance, we will designate it as "Mapped Drives (General)".

The policy can now be edited by right-clicking on it and selecting the "Edit" option.

The settings governing mapped drives are found at the following location:
User Configuration\Preferences\Drive Maps
Within this location, select the policy and, in the whitespace, right-click to choose "New Mapped Drive".

Set the "Action" to "Create" and then input the path to your shared folder.

Define the "Label" which will be the name displayed for the drive in File Explorer. A drive letter should also be selected; utilizing a consistent, static letter is recommended. Finally, ensure the "Show this drive" radio button is activated.

Upon user logon, the network drives will be mapped automatically and seamlessly.
