When individuals depend on generative AI for work-related tasks, their focus often shifts to validating the AI’s output rather than engaging in higher-level cognitive processes. These processes include the creation, evaluation, and analysis of information.
Reduced Opportunities for Cognitive Exercise
The study suggests that if human intervention occurs solely when AI responses are inadequate, workers are denied regular opportunities to practice their judgment. This lack of practice can weaken their cognitive abilities, leaving them unprepared when exceptions arise.
Essentially, excessive reliance on AI to perform cognitive tasks can diminish our ability to independently solve problems, particularly when the AI system fails to provide a suitable solution.

The investigation involved 319 participants who reported using generative AI at least weekly in their professional lives. Respondents detailed three instances of AI usage, categorized as follows:
- Creation: Tasks like drafting standard emails.
- Information: Activities such as researching topics or summarizing lengthy articles.
- Advice: Seeking guidance or generating charts from existing data.
Participants were then questioned about their engagement with critical thinking skills during these tasks and whether AI usage increased or decreased their cognitive effort.
Mitigating Potential Negative Outcomes
Approximately 36% of participants indicated they employed critical thinking to counteract potential adverse effects of AI usage. For example, one participant utilized ChatGPT to compose a performance review but meticulously reviewed the output to avoid potential disciplinary issues.
Another respondent reported editing AI-generated emails before sending them to superiors, ensuring the communication aligned with the company’s hierarchical structure and respect for seniority. Many participants also cross-referenced AI-generated responses with broader web searches, potentially negating the efficiency benefits of using AI.
Awareness of AI Limitations is Crucial
To effectively address the limitations of generative AI, users must possess an understanding of those shortcomings. However, the study revealed that not all participants were fully aware of the boundaries of AI capabilities.
The paper emphasizes that the potential for negative consequences from AI responses can stimulate critical thinking, but only if the user is consciously aware of these potential harms.
Confidence Levels and Critical Thinking Effort
Interestingly, the study found that participants who expressed greater confidence in AI demonstrated less critical thinking effort compared to those who had more faith in their own abilities.
Implications for Independent Problem-Solving
While the researchers refrain from definitively stating that generative AI tools diminish intelligence, the findings suggest that over-dependence on these tools can weaken our capacity for independent problem-solving. This highlights the importance of maintaining a balance between AI assistance and human cognitive engagement.
