jokr Secures Funding, Reaches Unicorn Status - Instant Grocery Delivery

The Rise of Online Grocery Shopping and JOKR's Rapid Growth

Currently, online grocery sales represent a relatively small portion of the overall market. However, recent data indicates a significant shift is underway, with projections suggesting these sales will exceed 20% by the year 2026. This anticipated growth is fueled by an increasing number of consumers becoming comfortable with the convenience of purchasing groceries online.

JOKR: Pioneering Instant Grocery Delivery

Responding to this evolving consumer behavior, JOKR, a New York-based instant grocery delivery startup, is positioning itself as a leader in the field. The company operates throughout the Americas and distinguishes itself through a streamlined shopping experience and remarkably swift delivery times – often within minutes of order placement.

JOKR recently secured $260 million in Series B funding, a mere five months following a $170 million Series A round. This latest investment was spearheaded by GGV Capital, Balderton Capital, and Tiger Global Management.

This influx of capital elevates JOKR to “unicorn” status, valuing the company at $1.2 billion. The company asserts its position as one of the fastest enterprises to achieve this milestone in history.

Rapid Expansion and Investor Confidence

According to Ralf Wenzel, founder and CEO, the company was launched only eight months prior to this funding announcement.

“An additional funding round wasn’t initially planned, as we possessed adequate capital from the July investment,” Wenzel explained to TechCrunch. “However, our rapid expansion into numerous countries and the resulting interest generated substantial demand from both existing and prospective investors. We are now strongly financed and pleased with the outcome.”

A Diverse Group of Investors

GGV Capital, Balderton, and Tiger Global participated in the upsized round, alongside new investors including Activant Capital, Greycroft, G-Squared, HV Capital, Kaszek, Mirae Asset, Monashees, and Moving Capital.

Impressive Growth Metrics and Operational Efficiency

While specific growth figures remain undisclosed, Wenzel revealed that JOKR’s gross merchandise volume is increasing by an average of 15% weekly. Furthermore, customer retention rates are notably high, with over 50% of new customers discovering the service organically.

JOKR has also significantly expanded its network of warehouse hubs, now operating 200 facilities across 15 cities, including New York, Mexico City, and Sao Paulo. A number of these hubs have already reached operational profitability, Wenzel stated.

Future Expansion Plans

The newly acquired capital will be strategically deployed to enhance JOKR’s presence within existing markets, focusing on deeper penetration at the neighborhood level. Wenzel cited the potential for establishing an additional hundred hubs in the Sao Paulo metropolitan area as an example.

Further expansion is planned for cities in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Chile, as well as continued growth within the United States. Details regarding the U.S. expansion will be revealed shortly, Wenzel indicated.

Investing in Technology and Customer Experience

JOKR will also dedicate resources to customer acquisition, marketing initiatives, and advancements in data science and technology. Particular emphasis will be placed on optimizing procurement and strengthening the supply chain.

Since the last funding round, the company has released an updated version of its product and app, designed to deliver a more personalized and curated shopping experience, moving beyond simply offering convenience items.

Commitment to Sustainability

JOKR has also committed to achieving carbon neutrality across its operations by the end of the following year.

Expanding Grocery Offerings

“Our vision extends beyond mere convenience and on-demand service,” Wenzel emphasized. “We aim to provide a comprehensive grocery selection encompassing fresh produce, meat, dairy products, and packaged foods.”

“We are actively broadening our fresh food offerings across all regions and striving to offer a more personalized experience than traditional grocery stores.”
