Install VMware Tools on Ubuntu Edgy Eft - Step-by-Step Guide

Installing VMware Tools on Older Ubuntu Versions

Important Update: Users of VMware Workstation 5.5.3 should consult the revised installation documentation. If your VMware Workstation version is 5.5.2 or earlier, the following instructions apply.

As Ubuntu undergoes continuous development, pre-compiled VMware Tools packages often lag behind, creating installation challenges. However, successful installation remains achievable with a few additional steps.

Preparing Your System

A crucial initial step involves ensuring the necessary compilation tools are present on your Ubuntu system, as they are not included in the default installation. Execute the following commands to begin the preparation:

sudo apt-get install build-essential

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`

The first command installs the gcc compiler and associated utilities. The second command retrieves the kernel header files corresponding to your currently running kernel version. Note the use of the backtick (`) character, located next to the number 1 key.

Initiating the Installation

Next, access the "VM" menu within your virtual machine and select "Install VMware Tools."

This action mounts the VMware Tools installation media within your Ubuntu environment, allowing the installation process to commence. Proceed with the following commands to initiate the installation:

cp /cdrom/*.gz /tmp/

cd /tmp

tar xvzf VM*.gz

cd vmware*

sudo ./vmware-install.pl

Completing the Installation

Throughout the installation, accept all default options presented. The installer will inquire about compiling a module for your specific system. Confirm this action by selecting "yes" and continuing.

Upon completion of the installation process, a reboot of your virtual machine is required. This final step activates the newly installed VMware Tools.

Compatibility

These instructions have been successfully tested on the following Ubuntu releases:

  • Ubuntu Dapper
  • Ubuntu Edgy Eft
