Switching from Gnome to KDE on Ubuntu

For users transitioning from Windows, the standard Ubuntu desktop environment, utilizing the Gnome window manager, can present a learning curve. A more familiar alternative is the KDE desktop, which offers functionalities comparable to the Windows Start menu.

If Ubuntu is already installed, a complete reinstall with Kubuntu isn't necessary. The KDE desktop environment can be installed directly by installing the kubuntu-desktop package and its associated dependencies.

Installation via Terminal

While graphical user interface (GUI) tools are available, the most straightforward method involves using the terminal. Open a terminal window and execute the following command:

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

The system will request your password. Following this, a confirmation prompt will appear; press the 'Y' key to initiate the installation process.

The download and installation of necessary updates may require some time. During this period, it's advisable to take a break.

You will then be asked to choose a login manager. Options include gdm (Ubuntu’s default) and kdm (KDE’s default). The default, gdm, can be retained.

Accessing the KDE Desktop

After the installation completes, reboot your computer. Upon reaching the login screen, click the "Options" button located in the lower-left corner.

A session selection menu will appear. Choose "KDE" from this menu to launch the KDE desktop environment.

Upon successful login, the KDE desktop should be displayed. Applications are organized within a "Start"-like menu, providing a familiar interface.

Addressing Display Issues in VMware

Users running Ubuntu within a VMware virtual machine may encounter display problems. These can manifest as an excessively large display resolution coupled with a desktop appearing in a low resolution, such as 800x600.

If this occurs, and mouse functionality is also impaired, a solution exists. Reboot the system and log in to the standard Ubuntu desktop environment, rather than KDE.

Restoring the xorg.conf File

Navigate to the /etc/X11/ directory. During the KDE/Kubuntu installation, the original xorg.conf file was likely backed up as xorg.conf.1.

To restore the original configuration, copy the xorg.conf.1 file back to xorg.conf. Reboot the system, and the display issues should be resolved.

Important Note: Modifying the xorg.conf file is only recommended if you are experiencing the aforementioned display problems.
