Installing IceWM on Ubuntu
The standard Ubuntu desktop environment utilizes the Gnome window manager. However, a variety of alternative window managers are available for installation. These include options such as AfterStep, Enlightenment, KDE, Xfce, Blackbox, and Fluxbox.
The installation of IceWM is a straightforward procedure. It’s important to ensure that you have enabled the necessary alternate install repositories beforehand.
Installation Command
To begin, open a terminal window and execute the following command:
sudo apt-get install icewm
This command will download and install the IceWM window manager on your Ubuntu system.
Accessing IceWM
Upon completion of the installation, log out of your current session. Then, locate and click the "Options" button, typically found in the lower-left corner of the login screen.
A menu will appear, displaying all window managers installed on the system. From this menu, select IceWM to initiate a session using the new window manager.
IceWM Desktop Overview
The IceWM desktop environment is characterized by its simplicity. Despite this, it offers extensive customization options, allowing users to theme it to their preferences.
Themes are readily available, even including designs that mimic other operating systems, such as a Windows XP theme.
Key Features
The "start" menu functionality is directly linked to the Windows key on your keyboard. Additionally, right-clicking on the desktop will also reveal the start menu.
The minimize and "restore" icons, positioned adjacent to the start menu, provide quick access to window management features. These allow for minimizing all open windows and displaying a list of currently running applications, respectively.
These features contribute to a streamlined and efficient user experience within the IceWM environment.
