Install GIMP 2.7.1 on Lucid Lynx with PPA

GIMP Installation on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) via PPA
Users of the GIMP image editor may be concerned to learn it will not be included in the standard installation of the upcoming Ubuntu 10.04 release. This article details the process of installing GIMP on Lucid Lynx utilizing a Personal Package Archive (PPA).
Reasons for Removal
The developers of GIMP have stated the software is geared towards professional users. Consequently, it was deemed too resource-intensive and complex for inclusion in the default Ubuntu desktop environment. Disk space considerations and user accessibility were also contributing factors.
Installing GIMP 2.7.1
If you require GIMP, installation is still achievable. The following steps will guide you through the process of installing GIMP 2.7.1 on Ubuntu 10.04 (currently in Alpha).
First, the official GIMP 2.7.1 PPA must be added to your software sources. Open a terminal window and execute this command:
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/matthaeus123/mrw-gimp-svn/ubuntu lucid main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list
Following the addition of the PPA, the GPG key needs to be imported. Enter the following command into your terminal:
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 405A15CB

Next, the software repository must be updated to reflect the changes. This is accomplished with the following command:
sudo apt-get update

The final step is to install GIMP 2.7.1 itself. Use the following command in your terminal:
sudo apt-get install gimp

Confirm the installation by typing 'Y' when prompted.

Launching GIMP
Once the installation is complete, GIMP can be launched from Applications > Graphics > GNU Image Manipulation Program.

You will now have GIMP available on your Ubuntu 10.04 system.

Enabling Single-Window Mode
By default, GIMP opens with multiple windows. This can be cumbersome. To enable single-window mode, navigate to Windows > Single-Window Mode.

This configuration streamlines the user experience by consolidating all GIMP elements into a single window.

Despite its exclusion from the standard installation, GIMP remains accessible on Ubuntu 10.04 through these straightforward instructions.
