Instagram DM Updates: Music Sharing, Scheduling & Translation

Instagram Enhances Direct Messaging Capabilities
Instagram is implementing a series of updates to its direct messaging (DM) system. These enhancements aim to position Instagram’s messaging platform as a stronger competitor to services like Apple’s iMessage and various other third-party messaging applications.
The new tools, available to Instagram users worldwide starting Wednesday, include message translation across 99 languages, options for scheduling and pinning messages, and the ability to share music directly within chats.
New Feature Availability
Initially, these features will be rolled out to users on both iOS and Android platforms. Web access to these functionalities will be introduced at a later date, according to Instagram.
Music Sharing Functionality
The addition of music sharing is expected to resonate particularly well with younger demographics. These users frequently discover new music through social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
To utilize this feature, users can access the sticker button within the chat composer. Selecting “Music” will allow them to search for songs and share a 30-second preview with friends in group chats or broadcast channels.
Benefits for Artists
Beyond personal use, this feature offers a new avenue for artists to connect with their fanbase through their Instagram presence.
Instagram is launching the music-sharing capability with collaborations from JENNIE and Doechii, who will be testing the feature within their respective Instagram broadcast channels.
Enhanced Communication Tools
Several new tools are designed to encourage users to adopt Instagram DMs as their primary chat application. A key addition is the ability to translate messages received or sent in different languages.
At launch, the translation feature supports 99 languages, facilitating communication across linguistic barriers.
Pinning Messages for Easy Access
Users can now pin important messages, images, memes, or reels to the top of their chats. This is achieved by holding down on the desired message and selecting the “Pin” option.
This functionality provides convenient access to frequently needed information or simply allows for highlighting favorite content. The pinning can be reversed by tapping the message again and choosing “Unpin.”
Instagram allows users to pin up to three messages within each conversation.
Message Scheduling
Following Apple’s iMessage, which introduced message scheduling in iOS 18, Instagram now also offers this capability. Users can long-press the “send” button to schedule messages for future delivery.
The scheduling feature allows users to select a specific date and time for message delivery, with a scheduling window of up to 29 days in advance.
Simplified Group Chat Invitations
Instagram has introduced a new method for inviting friends to group chats using QR codes. Users can access the “QR Code” option from the invite link within a chat.
This QR code can be shared directly, through the system’s share sheet, or saved as an image to the user’s Camera Roll for later distribution.
