Instagram Reels Picture-in-Picture Testing | Social Media News

Instagram Experiments with Reels Picture-in-Picture Mode
Instagram is currently evaluating a new Picture-in-Picture (PiP) functionality specifically for viewing reels. This confirmation was provided to TechCrunch by the company on Tuesday.
This capability enables users to continue watching reels within a minimized, floating window while simultaneously navigating other applications, thereby facilitating multitasking.
Discovery of the New Feature
The initial detection of this feature was made by app researcher Radu Oncescu. Participants in the testing phase will be presented with a notification detailing the new functionality and instructions for its activation.
Benefits of Picture-in-Picture
Beyond simply enabling multitasking, PiP has the potential to significantly boost viewer retention, particularly for extended video content. This is especially relevant given the current trend of decreasing attention spans.
For instance, users encountering a lengthy reel can opt to play it in the background while engaging in other activities, such as replying to messages or browsing X.
Existing PiP Support on Other Platforms
Popular platforms like TikTok and YouTube have already integrated support for Picture-in-Picture for a considerable period.
Implications for Creators and Instagram
The introduction of a comparable feature on Instagram could provide content creators with an improved opportunity to maintain audience engagement with their longer-form videos.
Consequently, this translates to increased time spent by users within the Instagram application itself.
Mosseri's Previous Comments
This test launch aligns with statements made several months prior by Instagram head Adam Mosseri. He indicated that the feature was under consideration.
Mosseri stated he would investigate the possibility of implementation following a user inquiry regarding the availability of PiP functionality, similar to that found on TikTok and YouTube.
Limited Initial Rollout
Currently, Instagram is testing this feature with a select group of users. The timeline for a broader release, or even if a wider rollout will occur, remains uncertain, as is typical with test features.
As with all beta features, its future availability is not guaranteed.
