Instagram AI Tools: Editing Appearances & Backgrounds with Prompts

Instagram to Introduce Generative AI Video Editing Tools
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, has announced forthcoming generative AI capabilities for the platform. These features will empower creators to modify virtually any element within their videos through the use of text prompts.
Powered by Meta’s Movie Gen AI
The new editing tools will be driven by Meta’s Movie Gen AI model. A launch on the social network is anticipated sometime in the coming year, as Mosseri revealed in a video shared on Thursday.
Mosseri emphasized the importance of creators to Instagram’s success. He stated the company aims to provide more resources to help them bring their visions to life.
Extensive Editing Possibilities
Creators will gain the ability to alter various aspects of their videos. This includes changing clothing, modifying the surrounding environment, and even adding accessories like jewelry.
The preview video demonstrates the potential of these AI editing features. Users can see examples of outfit changes, altered backgrounds, and transformations in overall appearance.
In one demonstration, Mosseri’s backdrop shifts to a winter scene. Another example shows him rendered as an animated, puppet-like character.
Future Performance
While the initial previews appear polished, the quality of the user-facing editing tools upon release remains to be seen.
Meta initially introduced Movie Gen in October. The model facilitates video and sound creation from text inputs, as well as editing of existing video content.
At the time of its unveiling, Meta indicated that Movie Gen would not be made available to the public directly. However, today’s announcement clarifies that the model will be utilized to enhance the AI editing toolkit for Instagram creators.
Competition in the AI Video Space
Meta’s development of Movie Gen followed similar releases from OpenAI and Adobe. OpenAI’s Sora was recently made available to a limited number of users earlier this month.
Adobe began beta testing its Firefly video generator with select users in October.
Here's a list of key takeaways:
- AI-Powered Editing: Instagram is integrating generative AI for video editing.
- Movie Gen AI: The features are powered by Meta’s Movie Gen model.
- Text Prompts: Creators will use text to modify videos.
- Extensive Changes: Users can alter outfits, backgrounds, and appearances.
