Instagram Closes Third-Party Sites Accessing Its Content

Instagram, the widely-used iPhone photography application, has begun to discontinue access for various third-party websites that were utilizing its content. Reports originating on Quora indicate that the application’s developers are actively addressing sites attempting to integrate with the Instagram platform.

Currently, Instagram is exclusively available to users of iOS devices. Having quickly amassed over 1 million users within a short timeframe, discussions are underway regarding a potential expansion to the Android operating system.

The Rise of Third-Party Browsers

Because photo browsing is limited to the official Instagram app, unless content is shared via platforms like Twitter, some enthusiasts developed third-party sites. These sites aimed to simplify the process of viewing recent Instagram photos.

Followgram experienced a surge in registrations from users seeking to browse and engage with other Instagram users directly within their web browsers. This led to a temporary suspension of new user registrations.

However, Instagram ultimately shut down Followgram, citing a breach of its Terms & Conditions.

Instagram’s Terms of Service

Instagram’s Terms & Conditions explicitly state the following:

Modification, adaptation, or hacking of Instagram is prohibited. Furthermore, websites must not be altered to falsely suggest an affiliation with Instagram. Accessing Instagram’s private API through methods other than the official iPhone application is also forbidden. Crawling, scraping, or caching content from Instagram, including user profiles and photos, is not permitted.

Essentially, due to the absence of a publicly available API, sites like Followgram and Instagram Shuffle (which remains operational) were accessing Instagram’s content in a manner that violated these terms.

This practice also placed additional strain on Instagram’s servers.

Criticism and Justification

Instagram faced some criticism for temporarily disabling Followgram, particularly as it had not offered a comparable service itself. However, there are valid arguments on both sides of the issue.

The third-party sites likely impacted Instagram’s server performance and, consequently, the user experience. Moreover, accessing content from a site without a public API is generally considered unethical.

The Future: An Official API

Instagram CEO, Kevin Systrom, confirmed the impending release of an API, responding to a discussion on Quora.

We fully support developers who wish to build upon the Instagram platform… in the near future. An API represents a formal agreement with the developer community, outlining the rules and guidelines for interaction, and guaranteeing stability and notice of any changes.

Systrom also noted that Instagram had received user complaints regarding Followgram displaying their content without explicit consent.

The situation highlights the importance of respecting Terms & Conditions and the need for a balanced approach between innovation and platform integrity.
