Instagram Edits Surpasses CapCut in Initial Downloads

Meta’s recently launched video editing application, Instagram Edits, experienced a more substantial initial release compared to ByteDance’s CapCut. Designed to facilitate video creation for Instagram Reels, stories, and other social media content, the app garnered approximately 702,900 downloads on iOS devices within its first 48 hours of availability.

Download Numbers: Edits vs. CapCut

This figure represents roughly 37 times the number of iOS downloads that CapCut achieved during its comparable initial period, as reported by app analytics firm Appfigures.

As of Thursday, Edits had accumulated 1.2 million iOS downloads and 5.9 million downloads on Android, totaling 7.1 million downloads overall.

In contrast, CapCut recorded only 83,500 downloads across both iOS and Android platforms during its first three days.

U.S. Market Performance

The disparity in performance is particularly evident within the United States. Edits was downloaded 381,000 times in its first three days in the U.S.

CapCut, during its U.S. launch, only reached 3,400 downloads.

This indicates that Edits’ U.S. launch was approximately 112 times larger than that of CapCut.

App Store Ranking and Meta’s Network Effect

The rapid adoption of Edits quickly propelled it to a prominent position in app store rankings, potentially driving further downloads and intensifying competition.

These statistics underscore the considerable influence of Meta’s network effects when introducing new applications that integrate with its broader social networking infrastructure.

On its debut day, April 22nd, the Instagram companion app reached the No. 1 spot on the U.S. iPhone App Store charts, encompassing both Top Overall apps and Top Apps excluding games.

It subsequently fell to No. 2 on both charts by the second day and maintained that position before dropping to No. 3 by Friday.

Current App Store Positions

The App Store’s ranking system, based on download numbers and the rate of new installations, currently places Edits higher than CapCut.

After its initial three days, CapCut held the No. 14 Overall position and No. 10 ranking among top non-game apps on the U.S. App Store.

Long-Term User Base

Despite its strong start, Edits still faces a significant challenge in matching CapCut’s established user base.

Launched in April 2020, the ByteDance-owned app, favored by TikTok creators, has amassed 1.22 billion downloads globally on iOS and Android, excluding downloads from China.

Creator Feedback

Initial reactions from creators have been mixed, according to social media marketing consultant Lia Haberman.

Many users have praised the app’s user-friendliness, integrated analytics, ad-free experience, 4K video support, and watermark-free exports.

However, some critics have noted that Edits currently lacks certain features available in CapCut, such as templates and a wider variety of transition effects.

Future Development and Monetization

Over time, Edits has the potential to close the gap with CapCut.

Alternatively, Meta may opt to introduce a premium subscription tier or incorporate advertisements as monetization strategies.
