Indonesia and Apple End iPhone 16 Sales Ban - Agreement Reached

Apple Resumes iPhone 16 Sales in Indonesia Following Agreement

Apple has secured permission to recommence sales of the iPhone 16 in Indonesia, as confirmed by the Industry Ministry during a press conference on Wednesday, according to a Reuters report.

The sales prohibition, initially enacted five months prior, was lifted after Indonesia previously restricted the U.S. tech company from distributing its iPhone 16 due to non-compliance with local regulations.

Local Content Requirements

These regulations stipulate that smartphones and tablets sold within Indonesia must incorporate a minimum of 40% locally sourced components.

In December, Apple pledged an initial investment of $1 billion towards establishing a manufacturing facility in Indonesia.

This facility will be dedicated to the production of components utilized in Apple smartphones and other devices.

Previously, a $100 million investment proposal from Apple was rejected in November, deemed insufficient to warrant authorization for the sale of its smartphones within the country.

Certification Process and Future Plans

Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Indonesia’s Industry Minister, indicated that Apple is currently undergoing the process of acquiring a local content certificate.

This certification is essential for the company to legally market its devices within Indonesia.

Apple has not yet issued a response to a comment request from TechCrunch regarding this development.

Last year, Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, visited Indonesia and expressed the company’s intent to explore potential manufacturing opportunities within the nation.

Global Investment and Supply Chain Diversification

This week, Apple announced a $500 billion investment over the next four years in its home country.

This investment will focus on advanced manufacturing, engineering initiatives, and educational programs, with a particular emphasis on artificial intelligence and the development of chips designed for AI workloads.

In recent years, Apple has actively worked to diversify its supply chains, lessening its dependence on China.

Currently, the iPhone 16 is being manufactured in Brazil, India, and China.

Furthermore, various AirPods models are assembled in Vietnam.

Similar Restrictions for Other Brands

Jakarta has also imposed a sales ban on Google Pixel phones from Alphabet due to a comparable issue.

This restriction stemmed from Google’s insufficient utilization of local components, as reported in October.

According to recent data from the third quarter of 2024, the leading smartphone brands in Indonesia are Oppo, Xiaomi, Transsion, Samsung, and Vivo.
