Indexing PDFs Without Adobe Reader

Many users are now opting for the streamlined and cost-effective Foxit PDF reader as an alternative to Adobe Reader. However, a common question arises: is it possible to index PDF files for search purposes without having Adobe Reader installed?

While it may seem like indexing functions automatically, it's important to understand that Adobe Reader includes an IFilter component. This component assists Windows in indexing your PDF documents, making them searchable.

Installing the Foxit IFilter

To eliminate Adobe Reader from your system while retaining PDF indexing capabilities, you must download and install the Foxit IFilter separately. This ensures continued functionality without the need for Adobe software.

Following the installation of the IFilter, a rebuild of the Windows index is necessary for the changes to take effect. Access Indexing Options by typing "Indexing" into the Start menu search bar.

Within Indexing Options, select the "Advanced" button to proceed.

On the Advanced Options page, locate and click the "Rebuild" button.

This rebuilding process can be time-consuming. It is recommended to initiate it during a period of inactivity, such as overnight.

Completing the Process

After the rebuild is complete, your system will be configured to utilize Foxit software for PDF handling, rather than Adobe Reader.

You can download the Foxit PDF IFilter from the official Foxit website to begin the process.

Installation of the IFilter is key to maintaining search functionality after removing Adobe Reader.
