A First Look at imo.im: A Potentially Top-Tier IM Service
I generally prefer to focus on functionality rather than extensive communication. My experience with instant messaging is limited; I’ve only used Yahoo! Messenger on my computer, primarily for its free text messaging capabilities to mobile devices.
Therefore, providing a completely impartial assessment of the best IM client would be difficult. However, even with my limited exposure, it became immediately apparent that imo.im is a remarkably strong contender.
Why Hasn't imo.im Gained More Recognition?
It’s unusual for a high-quality service to remain relatively unknown. While MakeUseOf has featured the service on a couple of occasions – found here and here – the developers have maintained a deliberately low profile.
For the past two years, the project has been developed quietly, remaining largely under the radar. After a three-year period in alpha testing, this robust application has now been publicly released with a refreshed interface.
Platform Availability
Currently, imo.im is accessible through several platforms.
- A web-based chat client utilizing Flash technology.
- A dedicated application for iOS devices.
- An application designed for the Android operating system.
This multi-platform support enhances its accessibility to a wide range of users. The developers have focused on delivering a consistent experience across these different environments.
Connecting to Multiple Networks with imo.im
Upon your initial visit to imo.im, the uncluttered interface is immediately apparent. A significant amount of whitespace and a centrally positioned login form characterize the design. Interestingly, the aesthetic bears a resemblance to Google’s, a connection stemming from the fact that Georges Harik, a co-founder, was among Google’s earliest employees.
Initiating use of imo.im requires simply logging in with an existing instant messaging account. Additional accounts can be integrated and linked to the platform at a later time.
Following login, a spacious interface is presented, featuring compact menu columns on both the left and right sides of the page. The "Add Account" function, found within the "Accounts" menu on the left, allows for the connection of further IM accounts. Hovering the mouse cursor over an account reveals basic account information.
Your current status can be swiftly altered using the dropdown menu located at the top of the page.
Profile picture customization is also readily available; simply click on the profile area positioned above the "Accounts" menu to make changes.
On the right-hand side, the "Buddies" menu is visible. Similar to the "Account" menu, detailed information about a contact can be viewed by hovering over their profile.
Contacts are automatically organized into groups based on existing groupings within your connected IM accounts. However, new groups can be created easily by selecting the "Create a new group" option. Adding new contacts is equally straightforward.
Rearranging contacts between groups is accomplished through a simple drag-and-drop interface.
Incoming friend requests from your various IM accounts are displayed within imo.im, allowing you to either Deny, Block, or Add the requesting individual.
Selecting a friend from the list initiates a dedicated chat window, which can be expanded to occupy the full screen if desired. For a more organized workspace, a tabbed view can be selected using the button to the left of the "Buddies" menu.
Notifications are presented within a small, yellow-colored window within the imo.im environment.
Desktop notifications can be enabled if your web browser supports this functionality.
Expanding the Capabilities of imo.im
Beyond its multi-platform chat connectivity, imo.im provides additional functionalities. A small microphone icon, located within the chat window's text input area, indicates support for voice messaging.
This feature empowers users to transmit audio messages to their contacts, with a maximum duration of 30 seconds per message.
Enabling Voice Messaging
Utilizing this capability requires granting imo.im access to your device’s microphone and camera. Permission requests will be presented to the user during setup.
To record and dispatch a voice message, simply press and hold the green "Hold to talk" button while speaking into your microphone. The message is automatically sent upon releasing the button.
Benefits for Mobile Users
While voice messaging may have limited utility within the browser-based client, it unlocks a valuable feature for mobile users: free calls. The application effectively transforms your smartphone into a walkie-talkie, enabling voice communication over an internet connection without incurring traditional phone charges.
With a reliable internet connection, users can also engage in continuous audio and/or video conversations between computers and mobile devices.
File Sharing Options
imo.im also facilitates file sharing between contacts. Clicking the "Send File" tab allows you to select a file from your device.
After choosing the desired file, click the "Send file" button to transmit it. Note that only one file can be sent at a time.
Understanding Imo.im's Interface Elements
Several subtle features are present at the base of the imo.im interface that users may overlook. One such element is the "Sessions" link. Selecting this link reveals the "Active Sessions" window, displaying details regarding the devices on which you are presently logged into imo.im.
Another important option is "Preferences". Within this section, users can activate desktop notifications, provided their web browser offers this functionality. Furthermore, it allows for the restriction of contact requests from users not included in your contacts list.

Imo.im stands out as a highly effective communication platform. A key benefit distinguishing it from other services is its fluid synchronization across web, iOS, and Android platforms.
