Ilya Sutskever to Lead Safe Superintelligence Efforts

Ilya Sutskever Assumes CEO Role at Safe Superintelligence
Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder of OpenAI, has announced his transition into the Chief Executive Officer position at Safe Superintelligence, the AI startup he established in 2024.
In a statement released on X, Sutskever verified on Thursday that Daniel Gross, the startup’s co-founder and previous CEO, concluded his tenure with the company on June 29th. Furthermore, Daniel Levy, also a co-founder of Safe Superintelligence, is now assuming the role of President, as indicated by Sutskever.
Reports of Acquisition and Focus on Core Mission
This announcement arrives following reports suggesting that Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, was engaged in advanced discussions to recruit Gross, alongside his long-term investment partner, former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman. There were even indications that Zuckerberg considered acquiring Safe Superintelligence outright, a company with a recent valuation of $32 billion.
Sutskever directly addressed these acquisition rumors, stating, “We are appreciative of the interest shown by various companies, but our dedication remains firmly focused on completing our current work.” He emphasized the company’s resources, asserting, “We possess the necessary computational power, a skilled team, and a clear understanding of the path forward. We will continue to develop safe superintelligence collaboratively.”
Questions Arising from Gross' Departure
The departure of Gross naturally prompts inquiry regarding the future of the startup. If Safe Superintelligence was nearing a significant breakthrough – as its mission suggests – why would a co-founder choose to pursue a new venture, potentially with Meta?
It’s important to note that Safe Superintelligence defines itself as the world’s “first straight-shot SSI lab.” This signifies that the company’s sole objective is the development of safe superintelligence, with no other products or ventures planned.
Meta's AI Ambitions and Talent Acquisition
Meanwhile, Meta Superintelligence Labs is anticipated to create technology that will enhance a wide range of Meta’s existing products. Zuckerberg’s announcement regarding the new unit highlighted Meta’s proficiency in building and scaling products for billions of users, and referenced initial successes in AI-powered wearables.
Gross, having previously led AI initiatives at Apple following the acquisition of his prior startup, could find a more familiar role at Meta if he joins. Zuckerberg has also been actively recruiting leading researchers from OpenAI and Google DeepMind to bolster his new AI team.
Challenges and Responsibilities for Sutskever
Sutskever will likely face new challenges as CEO of Safe Superintelligence. While he has held prominent positions previously, such as Chief Scientist at OpenAI, the CEO role entails responsibilities like securing further investment and attracting top-tier talent.
Sutskever affirmed in his statement that he will continue to lead Safe Superintelligence’s technical team, ensuring continued progress toward their core objective.
- Key Personnel Changes: Ilya Sutskever is now CEO, Daniel Levy is President, and Daniel Gross has departed.
- Acquisition Rumors: Meta reportedly considered acquiring Safe Superintelligence.
- Focus on SSI: Safe Superintelligence remains dedicated solely to developing safe superintelligence.
