Owners of Ray-Ban Meta glasses received an email notification on Tuesday detailing these changes, as reported by The Verge. AI functionalities are now activated on the glasses upon initial use. Consequently, Meta’s AI will analyze images and videos captured through the device when these features are engaged.
Furthermore, Meta will retain customers’ voice recordings to enhance its products. Notably, there is no provision for users to decline this data collection.
Data Recording Specifics
It’s important to clarify that Ray-Ban Meta glasses do not continuously record and store the surrounding environment. The device only preserves speech initiated by the user following the “Hey Meta” activation phrase.
Voice Data Retention and Usage
According to Meta’s privacy documentation concerning voice services for wearable technology, voice transcripts and recordings may be stored for a period of up to one year. This retention is intended to facilitate improvements to Meta’s products.
Users who wish to prevent Meta from utilizing their voice data for AI training must manually delete each recording via the Ray-Ban Meta companion application.
Similar Policy Changes by Amazon
This shift in terms mirrors a recent policy adjustment implemented by Amazon concerning Echo devices. As of last month, all Echo voice commands are processed through the cloud, eliminating the option for local voice data processing, which offered greater privacy.
