IBM Acquires Instana: Expanding Hybrid Cloud Capabilities

As IBM shifts its focus from traditional software and services to a business centered around hybrid cloud management, the company declared its plans to acquire Instana, a rising applications performance management company utilizing a cloud native methodology that aligns with this strategic direction.
The financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed by either company.
The addition of Instana will enhance IBM’s existing suite of management tools, providing capabilities for monitoring containerized environments operating on Kubernetes. IBM anticipates that integrating this startup will empower its customers to effectively manage intricate hybrid and multi-cloud deployments.
“Today’s clients are challenged with overseeing a complicated technological landscape, encompassing vital applications and data distributed across diverse hybrid cloud settings – including public clouds, private clouds, and on-premises infrastructure,” stated Rob Thomas, senior vice president for cloud and data platform. He expressed confidence that Instana will simplify these tasks, leveraging machine learning to deliver more comprehensive insights.
In a 2018 report following the company’s $30 million Series C funding round, TechCrunch’s Frederic Lardinois highlighted Instana’s key strength: “Instana truly distinguishes itself through its automated discovery and monitoring of the constantly evolving infrastructure that underpins modern applications, particularly those built with containerized microservices.” This capability appears to be exactly what IBM was seeking.
Instana’s founders also recognize the synergy between the two organizations, particularly given the significance of the 2018 Red Hat acquisition to IBM’s hybrid cloud strategy. “I was enthusiastic about the potential of combining Instana’s advanced APM and Observability platform with IBM’s Hybrid Cloud and AI technologies from the moment IBM proposed the idea of a collaboration and technology integration,” explained CEO Mirko Novakovic in a blog post announcing the agreement.
In a recent CNBC interview, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna conveyed that the company is heavily invested in hybrid cloud management, with Red Hat serving as a central component. Coupled with the decision to separate its managed infrastructure services division, this acquisition demonstrates IBM’s commitment to exploring all available avenues.
Founded in 2015, during the initial stages of Kubernetes development, Instana is headquartered in Chicago with an additional office in Munich. The company’s APM solution has since specialized in addressing the unique monitoring requirements of cloud native environments. Throughout its growth, Instana secured $57 million in funding, with the Series C round in 2018 representing its largest investment.
The completion of the transaction is contingent upon standard regulatory approvals, but the companies expect it to finalize within the coming months.
