IBM Quantum System One at Cleveland Clinic - Advancing Healthcare with Quantum Computing

IBM and Cleveland Clinic Forge Quantum Computing Partnership
In recent years, IBM has deployed its Quantum System One machines globally. Today, the company announced its inaugural private-sector U.S. installation through a new, decade-long collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic. This represents IBM’s first U.S.-based installation of a quantum computer outside of its own facilities.
Significantly, this also marks the first instance of a healthcare institution procuring and housing a quantum computer. As a result of this agreement, Cleveland Clinic will gain access to IBM’s forthcoming next-generation quantum system, boasting over 1,000 qubits.
Early Stages of Quantum Computing Commercialization
The commercialization of quantum computing is still in its nascent stages. For the majority of current users, accessing systems via the cloud adequately serves their experimental needs. However, a growing number of research institutions and commercial entities are seeking on-premises quantum computers.
This trend is driven by the desire for complete and dedicated access to a machine’s capabilities.
A Broader IBM and Cleveland Clinic Collaboration
This new partnership extends beyond quantum computing, encompassing IBM’s hybrid cloud portfolio for high-performance computing and its suite of AI tools. The collaboration also underpins the establishment of Cleveland Clinic’s new Center for Pathogen Research & Human Health.
This center benefits from a substantial $500 million investment originating from the State of Ohio, Jobs Ohio, and the Cleveland Clinic itself.
Long-Term Commitment to Quantum Advancement
“This announcement signifies the first commitment from a private or nonprofit organization to not only possess fully dedicated systems but also to secure access for decades to come,” stated Dario Gil, IBM’s SVP and director of IBM Research.
“They are essentially partnering with us throughout the entire development roadmap. This includes receiving access to a fleet of quantum computers and the next-generation quantum computer slated for release next year. They are the first to request the initial 1,000+ qubit system.”
A Forward-Looking Investment
Gil emphasized that investing heavily in quantum computing at this stage requires a visionary organization. While nation-states are understandably exploring this emerging technology due to its potential across numerous fields, a nonprofit’s similar investment is noteworthy.
“The ambition demonstrated by the Cleveland Clinic’s leadership is exceptionally high, as they are focused on future possibilities,” Gil added.
Ongoing Support and Security
As part of the agreement, Cleveland Clinic researchers will also have access to IBM’s complete quantum portfolio through the cloud. IBM will retain ownership of and provide maintenance and support for the on-premises quantum computer.
This arrangement mirrors IBM’s existing collaborations with government research laboratories in both Japan and Germany.
“Providing ongoing maintenance and support is crucial,” Gil explained. “They require our expertise to ensure proper operation. Furthermore, we prioritize maintaining the security and safety of these highly sensitive technologies.”
Skills Development and Future Workforce
The partnership also includes a focus on developing expertise in quantum computing, AI, and high-performance computing among Cleveland Clinic’s researchers.
Revolutionizing Discovery and Improving Lives
“Through this innovative collaboration, we have a unique opportunity to bring the future to life,” said Tom Mihaljevic, M.D., president and CEO of Cleveland Clinic. “These new computing technologies will revolutionize discovery in the life sciences and ultimately improve people’s lives.”
“The Discovery Accelerator will enable our renowned teams to build a forward-looking digital infrastructure and transform medicine, while training the workforce of the future and growing our economy.”
