AI Safety: Humans as Checks and Balances - Lattice CEO

The Significance of Balance in the Age of AI
Sarah Franklin, a prominent figure in the tech industry, identifies balance as a crucial concept, particularly as businesses integrate artificial intelligence (AI). This perspective emphasizes a harmonious approach to technological advancement.
Franklin currently leads Lattice, an employee performance software company established by Jack Altman, which boasts a valuation of $3 billion. Her views, shared at SXSW London and in discussions with TechCrunch, consistently highlight the importance of equilibrium during this period of AI-driven transformation.
Prioritizing People at Lattice
“We put people first,” Franklin stated, referencing Lattice’s own adoption of AI and automation features. This philosophy underscores a commitment to employee well-being and development.
While some organizations promote AI as a means to significantly reduce their workforce, other tech leaders are advocating for a more measured approach. This involves retaining human employees while simultaneously empowering them with AI assistants and “agents.”
Franklin cautioned against solely focusing on cost savings through complete workforce replacement. She suggested that such a strategy could ultimately diminish customer appeal.
Building Trust and Maintaining Accountability
“It’s important to ask yourself, ‘Are you building for the success of the AI first [or are] you building for the success of the people and your customers first?’” Franklin questioned. She emphasized that trust is a company’s most valuable asset, and maintaining consumer confidence is paramount.
Efficiency is valuable, but should not come at the expense of eroding trust, she added.
Furthermore, Franklin stressed the necessity of transparency, accountability, and responsibility in AI implementation. Leaders should openly communicate AI’s functions to employees.
AI applications should be focused and clearly defined, ensuring understanding of their operation. Ultimately, humans must remain accountable for the outcomes influenced by AI.
Lattice's Approach to AI Integration
“Otherwise, we are then in service of the AI versus the AI being in service of us,” Franklin explained.
Following her SXSW presentation, Franklin detailed Lattice’s development of an AI HR agent. This agent provides proactive insights and supports employees during individual meetings.
The company also offers a platform enabling clients to create customized AI agents tailored to their specific business needs.
The Importance of Human Oversight
Franklin firmly believes that human supervision is essential for any AI technology deployed within a company. “It’s a way to just have the regular checks and balances that we’re used to in our workforce,” she noted.
She predicts that companies prioritizing people will thrive in this new AI landscape. This human-centric approach serves as a vital safeguard in AI development.
A Responsibility to Society
“We all have a responsibility to make sure that we’re doing this for the people of society,” Franklin asserted. She concluded by stating that human connection is irreplaceable, and companies recognizing this will ultimately succeed.
