Huawei Bribery Scandal: Lobbying and EU Politicians

Huawei Faces New Bribery Allegations in Europe
Huawei is currently embroiled in a new controversy within Europe. Reports indicate that lobbyists working on behalf of the Chinese technology company allegedly offered bribes to members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in an attempt to influence legislative decisions.
Concerns Over Potential Government Influence
Having previously been excluded from the U.S. market due to concerns regarding potential security risks and the possibility of its telecommunications infrastructure being exploited by the Chinese government, Huawei reportedly sought to prevent similar repercussions in Europe.
Several European nations are presently in the process of removing Huawei equipment from their networks. However, the speed at which this is occurring has drawn criticism from some observers.
Police Raids and Ongoing Investigation
A report published by Follow the Money (FTM), a Netherlands-based investigative journalism organization, details recent law enforcement activity. Belgian police conducted raids at 21 locations across Belgium and Portugal this morning.
These raids were conducted as part of a continuing investigation into alleged corruption. The locations searched included Huawei’s European offices, as well as the residences of lobbyists connected to the company.
Details of the “Generation” Probe
The investigation, internally referred to as “Generation,” has been underway for over two years. It centers on accusations that Huawei lobbyists provided financial incentives to MEPs.
The alleged purpose of these payments was to secure support for Huawei’s interests within the European Parliament. Approximately 15 current and former MEPs are currently under investigation.
Investigators are focusing on potential offenses including bribery, forgery, money laundering, and participation in a criminal organization, according to the FTM report.
