Diamond WR300N Wireless Repeater: A Review

Diamond Multimedia has developed a noteworthy hardware solution. This device is a highly portable wireless repeater, designed for compatibility with the N standard.

What's Included

The package contains the repeater itself, alongside an Ethernet cable for wired connections. A quick start guide is also provided, along with comprehensive documentation and the necessary software on CD to facilitate the setup process.

Physical Characteristics

The repeater’s physical dimensions are quite compact. Its size is comparable to that of a standard AC adapter, potentially requiring consideration for placement on a power strip.

The unit’s casing is primarily plastic and features a single Ethernet port. A convenient WPS switch is also incorporated, offering simplified connectivity for networks utilizing this feature. Several status LEDs provide visual feedback on the device’s operation.

While the aesthetic design isn’t particularly elaborate, the repeater’s small form factor distinguishes it from larger, more cumbersome repeater models.

Additional Features

A recessed “reset” button is located adjacent to the Ethernet port on the underside of the device. This allows for easy restoration of factory settings if needed.

The overall design prioritizes functionality and compactness, making it a practical solution for extending wireless network coverage.

Initial Configuration

To begin the setup process, connect the repeater to a power outlet or surge protector. Subsequently, establish a connection to your computer using an Ethernet cable. Then, direct your web browser to the address 10.0.10.254.

For optimal results and to avoid potential conflicts, it is recommended to disconnect your computer from any existing networks. A system restart is also advised to ensure no other configurations interfere with the setup procedure. Previous experiences have demonstrated the value of this precaution, ensuring a smoother and more efficient process.

The default credentials for accessing the device are both “admin” for both the username and password.

An “Automatic Setup” function is integrated into the web interface. Therefore, utilizing the included CD for setup was deemed unnecessary.

Selecting the Auto Setup option navigates you to a Site Survey page. Here, you select the wireless network you intend to extend the range of. This constitutes the majority of the automated configuration (a full-size image is provided below).

Simply initiate a network scan by clicking “Refresh” until your desired network is listed. Then, select “Connect” to establish the connection.

Beyond this streamlined setup, the WR300N supports Access Point mode, Wireless Bridge mode, and a manual configuration option for Repeater mode. Prior to utilizing these, however, certain essential settings were adjusted.

Initial Configuration Steps

A crucial first step involved altering the factory-set default password. This can be accomplished by navigating to the System menu and selecting the Password option.

Subsequently, I opted to modify the IP Address of the device to align with the existing IP addressing scheme of my network.

This setting is located within the System menu, specifically under the Local section.

Access Point Configuration

Selecting “Access Point” within the Operation Mode menu, accessible via the Manual Setup button, presents a set of configuration options.

The WR300N can function as an access point, extending wireless connectivity from an existing wired network connection.

This mode allows for the specification of a network name (SSID) and security encryption settings to establish a wireless network.

During evaluation, the wireless signal range proved to be quite satisfactory, likely attributable to the device’s N-standard compatibility.

However, utilizing the WR300N in access point mode resulted in some performance limitations when contrasted with a legacy WRT54G v1 router operating with DD-WRT.

While the performance difference was minimal in many scenarios, the inclusion of access point functionality remains a valuable feature.

Wireless Bridge Mode Functionality

Selecting “Wireless Bridge” within the Operation Mode selection presents a comparable configuration experience.

This mode enables functionality that is effectively the inverse of Access Point mode.

Specifically, Wireless Bridge mode allows the device to receive a wireless signal and then transmit that connection through its Ethernet port to a device lacking native wireless capabilities.

Testing was conducted utilizing both an Xbox 360 and a desktop computer, and both connections were established without issue.

The setup process proved to be uncomplicated and direct, and notably, this testing occurred on a network utilizing the older G standard.

Performance in terms of both speed and signal range met expectations during these trials.

Utilizing Manually Configured Repeater Functionality

For users desiring a tailored setup and precise control over their settings, the “Repeater” option within the Operation Mode menu provides the necessary customization.

This mode allows for the specification of individual criteria, enabling a more refined wireless extension.

Channel Configuration

It is crucial to configure the Channel setting to “Auto,” particularly if your primary router is also operating in automatic channel selection.

Failure to do so may result in connectivity issues and suboptimal performance.

Selecting “Auto” ensures the repeater dynamically adjusts to the least congested channel, maximizing signal strength and stability.

Note: Consistent channel settings between the router and repeater are generally recommended for seamless operation.

Finalizing Your Wireless Repeater Setup

After selecting your desired configuration options and implementing them, a reboot of the repeater is necessary. Simply disconnect the power supply and then relocate it to the most effective position for your specific needs.

Following this, it’s crucial to restart your computer and re-establish a connection to your network. A failure to do so can sometimes result in issues with IP address assignment.

I personally encountered difficulties obtaining an IP address from my router initially. If you experience similar problems and are uncertain about the completeness of your configuration, restarting your computer is a good first step.

Should issues persist after a reboot, further troubleshooting can then be undertaken to identify and resolve any remaining configuration concerns.

Performance Evaluation

After implementing the WR300N in Access Point mode as a replacement for my home’s wireless network, the performance didn’t immediately stand out as exceptional. Occasional disruptions were observed, however, the signal range demonstrated a noticeable improvement when operating on the 2.4 GHz band, particularly when compared to a Linksys WRT300N.

It is important to recognize that Diamond did not equip the WR300N with a 5GHz antenna. Consequently, users with networks configured for the 5GHz frequency may not fully benefit from its capabilities.

Repeater Mode Capabilities

The repeater mode, however, proved to be a significant strength. Performance remained consistent, with no observed slowdowns when the network load was distributed between the main router and the repeater. The extended range was also quite remarkable.

Previously, I utilized a Linksys WAP54G access point, flashed with DD-WRT firmware, functioning as a repeater. The WR300N demonstrably surpassed this older device in terms of throughput, and its range extended 1.5 times further.

Substituting my previous repeater with this more streamlined unit resolved prior issues with HD streaming across my network. Previously problematic streaming is now consistently reliable.

Diamond WR300N Wireless Repeater: Review and Assessment

Diamond has successfully created a functional device with the WR300N Wireless Repeater. While opportunities for enhancement exist, it represents a solid solution for a wide range of users.

Its diminutive size and unobtrusive design are, in our opinion, a significant benefit.

Purchasing two units could potentially provide broader coverage than relying solely on 5GHz technology, and may even be more cost-effective. The WR300N is particularly well-suited for individuals less experienced with network configuration.

We would confidently suggest this repeater to those seeking a straightforward setup and the convenience of WDS support. It’s also a viable option for users aiming to expand their existing network without a complete router replacement.

However, this repeater may not appeal to those who prefer the customization options offered by DD-WRT or are primarily driven by the lowest possible price. Conversely, if a compact, rapidly deployable, and reasonably fast device is required without extensive tweaking, the WR300N is a worthwhile investment.
