The question arises: what are the current, tangible uses for Wi-Fi Direct? In scenarios where devices and their accessories are engineered to leverage Wi-Fi Direct, the connection is established automatically, requiring no user intervention. The Roku 3 exemplifies this seamless functionality, as previously noted.

Although Wi-Fi Direct was conceived as a universal standard enabling communication between diverse devices adhering to the specification, widespread interoperability remains unrealized.

Consider a situation involving two recently purchased laptops, both marketed as Wi-Fi Direct compatible. One might anticipate a straightforward method for file exchange between them utilizing Wi-Fi Direct, but currently, this is not possible. Consequently, Wi-Fi Direct is not presently a feature demanding significant user attention; however, its potential for future utility is considerable.

Wi-Fi Direct represents an encouraging technology already demonstrating functionality in practical applications. Nevertheless, substantial development is needed before it evolves into a truly interoperable standard upon which general users can depend. Currently, its primary role is facilitating communication between products specifically designed for this purpose. For applications prioritizing minimal power consumption, Bluetooth Low Energy offers a superior solution, while Wi-Fi Direct presents a viable alternative to more power-intensive Bluetooth devices.
