Utilizing the Clock App on Your Android Device
The pre-installed Clock application on your Android smartphone functions as more than just a time display. It provides essential tools like an alarm clock, a convenient kitchen timer, and a precise stopwatch for measuring durations.
Users are able to configure numerous alarms and timers, personalize the snooze duration for alarms, and accurately track lap times with the stopwatch feature.
Accessing the Clock Application
The Clock app can be launched in two ways. Simply tap the Clock icon located on your Home screen, or navigate to the App Drawer and select the Clock app from within.
About This Guide
This guide specifically details the functionality of Google’s Clock app, readily available for download from the Google Play Store for a wide range of Android phones.
It's important to note that the built-in Clock app on your particular device may exhibit slight variations in operation, depending on the manufacturer of your Android phone.
Features of the Clock App
- Alarm: Wake up on time with customizable alarms.
- Timer: Perfect for timing cooking or other activities.
- Stopwatch: Accurately measure elapsed time, including lap times.
Each of these tools offers unique capabilities designed to enhance your daily routines. Exploring these features will allow you to maximize the utility of your Android device.
Utilizing the Alarm Functionality
Initially, the Clock application defaults to displaying the world clock. However, subsequent openings of the Clock app will direct you to the tool that was last in use. To navigate to the alarms feature, simply select the alarm icon located at the screen's top.

Adding a new alarm is accomplished by tapping the plus (+) icon situated at the bottom of the screen. This button facilitates the creation of multiple alarms as needed.

To configure the alarm time, tap the hour display on the left side of the time selection. Then, tap the desired hour on the clock presented on the right. Following this, select the minutes by tapping the minute display on the left and choosing the corresponding minutes on the clock, typically in five-minute intervals. Confirm your selection by tapping “AM” or “PM” and then “OK”.

For alarms that need to repeat, activate the “Repeat” checkbox.

By default, all days of the week are selected, indicated by white circles. To deselect specific days, tap on them. For an alarm that sounds only on weekdays, tap the “S” representing Sunday and the “S” representing Saturday. The starting day of the week can be adjusted within the Settings menu, which will be detailed later.

Days that are not selected will lack the white circle indicator. The “Oxygen” ringtone is pre-selected as the default alarm sound. Should you prefer a different ringtone, tap “Default ringtone (Oxygen)”.

A dialog box will appear, prompting you to choose how to proceed. To view available ringtones, tap “Media Storage”, then select “Just Once” for a one-time application or “Always” to make it the permanent selection.

A list of available ringtones will be displayed. Select your desired ringtone and confirm your choice by tapping “OK”.

For users who set multiple alarms, adding a label can help differentiate their purpose. To assign a label, tap “Label”.

Enter the desired label in the provided dialog box and tap “OK”.

To collapse the advanced options for the alarm, tap the upward-facing arrow.

When activated, the alarm’s slider button will appear red and positioned to the right. To deactivate the alarm, tap the slider button…

…causing it to turn white and slide to the left. To re-enable the alarm, simply tap the slider button once more.

Upon activation, a brief message will appear at the screen’s bottom, indicating the remaining time until the alarm triggers. To access and modify the alarm’s settings, tap the downward-facing arrow.

To permanently remove the alarm, display the settings by tapping the downward arrow and then select the trash can icon. Note that this action does not prompt for confirmation.

Unlike iOS, Android allows for snooze time adjustments. However, a custom snooze time cannot be set for each alarm individually; instead, the snooze duration is applied globally. To modify the snooze time, tap the menu button in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Select “Settings” from the displayed menu.

Within the Alarms section of the Settings screen, tap “Snooze length”. The default snooze duration is 10 minutes.

Adjust the “minutes” value on the Snooze length dialog box by swiping up or down, then tap “OK”.

To return to the main Clock app screen, tap the back button located in the upper-left corner.

When setting an alarm, ensure your device is not in silent mode or Do Not Disturb. Observe in the image below that the alarm clock icon on the status bar is grayed out due to Total Silence mode being enabled (the icon to the left of the alarm clock). Verify that the volume is appropriately adjusted and that alarms are permitted within the Do Not Disturb settings, particularly on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Once the volume is increased or settings are adjusted to allow the alarm to sound, the alarm icon on the status bar will appear white, rather than gray.

If you intend to use your Android device as a bedside alarm clock, enabling night mode can reduce screen brightness and minimize sleep disruption. To activate night mode, tap the menu button in the upper-right corner and select “Night mode”.

The screen will turn black, displaying the time and date in a light gray color.

Additional alarm settings are available, including alarm volume control, options for gradually increasing alarm volume, and the selection of the week’s starting day. You can also define an automatic silencing duration for alarms (1, 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 minutes, or Never). The volume buttons can be configured to activate snooze, dismiss the alarm, or remain inactive (default).
Utilizing the Timer Functionality
The Clock application allows for the configuration of numerous timers, offering greater versatility than a conventional kitchen timer, which typically accommodates only a limited number of simultaneous timings. To initiate the timer, select the timer icon located at the screen's top. Input the desired duration using the numeric keypad positioned on the right side of the display. Ensure that leading zeros are included as necessary.
For instance, to establish a timer for ten minutes, enter “1000” on the keypad. Simply entering “10” would result in a ten-second timer, rather than the intended ten minutes. The digital display on the left will show the hours, minutes, and seconds as you input the time.

Similar to the alarm feature, multiple timers can be active concurrently. Assigning labels to each timer is recommended for easy identification of the activity being timed.

To add a descriptive label to the current timer, tap the “Label” option. A label popup dialog box will appear, allowing you to enter a name for the timer.

Input the desired name within the label dialog and confirm by tapping “OK”. If the on-screen keyboard does not automatically appear, tap within the edit field to activate it.

While a timer is running, you can increment the time by one-minute intervals by tapping the “+1’” button located below the displayed time.

Upon initiating a timer, the Start button transforms into a Pause button, enabling temporary cessation of the timing process.

When paused, the time will blink on the display, and the Pause button reverts to a Start button. Selecting the Start button resumes timing from the point of interruption.
To create an additional timer, tap the timer plus icon situated in the bottom-right corner of the screen. New timers can only be added from an existing timer screen, regardless of whether it is currently running or paused.

Specify the duration for the new timer as previously described and then tap the Start button.

The dots visible on the right side of the screen signify the presence of multiple timers. Swipe vertically to navigate between the currently available timers.

To remove a timer, swipe to access it and then tap the trash icon.

When only a single timer is active, the indicator dots on the screen’s right side will disappear.

Several timer settings can be adjusted. Access these settings by tapping the menu button and selecting “Settings” from the displayed menu. The default ringtone for timer expiration is pre-configured.

If you have previously modified ringtone settings for either timers or alarms within the Clock application, you will be prompted to utilize the same method. Select “Just Once” or “Always” in response to the completion message. If this is your first time changing ringtones, tap “Media Storage” and then choose “Just Once” or “Always”.

The initial ringtone option, “Default alarm sound,” corresponds to the Timer Expired ringtone. Select a different ringtone from the list, or choose “None” to disable the sound upon timer completion. Confirm your selection by tapping “OK”.

Ensure that the volume is not muted and that features like Total Silence or Do Not Disturb are not enabled in a manner that would suppress alarm sounds if you desire the timer to alert you upon expiration.
Utilizing the Stopwatch Function
The built-in Clock application provides a straightforward yet effective stopwatch feature for timing various activities. Access to this function is gained by selecting the stopwatch icon located at the screen's upper portion. No preliminary configuration is required; simply press the Start button to initiate timing.

The stopwatch functionality includes the ability to record lap times. This involves momentarily halting the timer at designated points to document each stoppage. Press the lap button whenever a specific interval is completed, such as a runner finishing a circuit.

Recorded lap times are displayed alongside the current running time when the device is in landscape orientation. Alternatively, they appear below the running time in portrait mode. The Start button transforms into a Pause button while the stopwatch is active, allowing for temporary cessation of timing.

To return the stopwatch to its initial state, tap the circular arrow icon. When the stopwatch is paused, the Share button, situated in the bottom-right corner, enables the distribution of the elapsed time and lap data. This can be done via various methods, including cloud uploads and other sharing options.

Numerous applications available on the Play Store enhance the capabilities of alarms, timers, and stopwatches. Examples include Timely Alarm Clock, Alarm Clock Plus, and Alarm Clock Xtreme Free. Many of these applications consolidate these tools into a single, integrated platform.
