Instagram Map: How to Use & Protect Your Privacy

Instagram Map: Addressing Location Sharing Concerns
Following the introduction of Instagram’s new “Instagram Map” feature on Wednesday – a function similar to Snapchat’s Snap Map allowing U.S. users to share their recent activity location and explore location-specific content – Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, is actively working to clarify how user location data is handled.
Mosseri is emphasizing that location visibility is entirely dependent on user choice. Despite Meta’s confirmation that location sharing is disabled by default, widespread social media posts have incorrectly asserted that the feature is automatically activated, prompting calls for users to disable location services.
Clarifying User Misconceptions
“We are thoroughly reviewing all aspects of the feature,” Mosseri stated in a Threads post, “but initial findings suggest that much of the concern stems from user confusion.”
Many users mistakenly believe that because they can view their own location on the map upon opening the app, others can also see it. Mosseri assures users that the team is verifying that no location data is shared without explicit consent.
He further explained that the system is designed with a double consent mechanism, requiring users to confirm their decision to share their location after initially indicating their intent.
How the Feature Works
Some users are also experiencing confusion regarding the feature’s functionality. When accessing the Instagram Map, they observe populated locations.
This occurs because the map automatically incorporates location tags from recently shared Stories and Reels that include tagged locations. It’s important to note that Instagram previously displayed location tags in its map view.
However, the new Instagram Map feature provides significantly easier access to this information. This increased accessibility may prompt users to reconsider their practice of tagging locations in their Stories and Reels, particularly while still present at those locations.
Location Updates and Privacy
If a user enables location sharing on Instagram Map, their location is only updated when the app is actively open or running in the background.
This differs from Snap Map, which offers users the option of updating their location either upon app opening or in real-time.
Disabling Location Sharing
For users wishing to ensure their location remains private on Instagram Map, instructions on how to disable the feature are readily available.
Understanding these nuances is crucial for maintaining control over your privacy while utilizing Instagram’s new features.
Accessing the Instagram Map Feature
The new Instagram Map can be found by going to your Direct Messages section. Within DMs, locate and select the “Map” option, which is positioned at the top of the screen.
Upon initial access, a notification window will likely appear. This message informs users about the feature and its privacy implications.
Understanding the Initial Notification
The notification clarifies that your location remains private by default. It emphasizes that your location will only be visible to others if you actively choose to share it.
Furthermore, the message assures users that they retain full control over their privacy settings, allowing adjustments to be made at any time.
Managing Your Location-Sharing Settings
Upon initial access to the Map feature, a prompt titled “Who can see your location” will appear. This allows you to designate who has access to your location data.
Options include sharing with your Followers (those you mutually follow), a curated list of Close Friends, specific individuals, or completely disabling location sharing.
Adjusting Your Privacy Preferences
To modify these settings at any time, navigate to your profile. Tap the settings icon located in the upper-right corner of the screen.
Subsequently, select “Story, live and location” from the settings menu, and then tap the “Location sharing” button. This will bring you to the location sharing control panel.
Understanding Location Visibility
It’s important to understand that even with your own location sharing disabled, other users can still share their location with you.
Consequently, you will remain able to view the locations of those who have chosen to share them on the Map.
- Sharing with Friends allows those you follow back to see your location.
- The Close Friends option limits visibility to a specific, designated group.
- Selecting individual users grants location access only to those chosen.
- Choosing “No one” completely disables location sharing from your end.
Utilizing the Instagram Map Feature
Upon launching the Instagram application, users are presented with the locations of connections who have opted to share their whereabouts. This includes access to Stories and Reels categorized by geographical location from accounts you follow.
As an illustration, should a friend participate in a local music festival and share a Story from the event, its location will be visible on the map. Likewise, a Reel posted by a creator detailing a new eatery within your city will be discoverable through the Instagram Map.
Location-based content remains accessible on the Map even with your device’s location services disabled.
The platform also enables users to post temporary messages, known as “Notes,” directly onto the map for others to view. These Instagram Notes, previously displayed at the top of your direct message inbox, are now also locatable on the map when shared with a specific location.
