Our recommendation, considering the decreasing costs of SSD models, is to avoid purchasing drives smaller than 120GB. We suggest aiming for a 250GB drive or larger, as 120GB can become quite limited after installing your operating system and applications.

The most crucial factor in drive selection isn't the storage size, but rather the physical size of the drive. Laptops utilize 2.5" drives, differing from the larger 3.5" drives commonly found in desktop computers.

It’s important to note that solid state drives are generally manufactured in the 2.5" form factor. Therefore, even when used in a desktop, they require a bracket adapter for proper fitting.

Drive Thickness Explained

The 12.5mm thickness is relatively rare, typically found in high-performance workstation laptops. These are usually mechanical drives with larger capacities due to the additional space for a disk platter.

9.5mm is the most prevalent thickness for traditional mechanical 2.5" hard disk drives. Conversely, solid state drives are almost universally 7mm thick, often including a 2.5mm spacer to ensure compatibility with various mounting styles.

In many cases, the spacer isn't even required. As illustrated in the image, our upgrade drive is securely mounted within the metal caddy of our Dell laptop.

The caddy is designed to accommodate a standard 9.5mm mechanical drive, but it readily supports a slimmer 7mm SSD, effectively acting as a spacer and maintaining proper drive positioning.

Upgrading a laptop from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD generally presents no issues, as you're transitioning from a thicker drive (12.5mm or 9.5mm) to a thinner one (7mm). However, awareness of this often-overlooked distinction is vital to verify your laptop model and its compatible drive size before making a purchase.

Carefully loosen the screws securing the access panel. Note that some laptop screws incorporate retention washers, preventing complete removal. Gently open the panel once the screws are loosened.

In this instance, the service panel provides access to multiple components. The primary hard drive bay is located at the lower right, housing the drive slated for replacement. Adjacent to the primary bay are the memory DIMMs, followed by an empty mSATA slot. Below this is the Wi-Fi adapter, and above, a secondary drive bay is visible.

Some laptops utilize separate service panels for each component, requiring you to open only the panel for the hard drive bay. Others necessitate more extensive disassembly, potentially including keyboard removal, to reach the drive.

Loosen the screws that secure the hard drive or hard drive caddy. Gently remove the assembly from the laptop. Prioritize preventing dropped screws from falling inside the laptop chassis and avoiding contact between the drive/caddy and the underlying circuit board.

Once the assembly is removed, the drive swap can be completed. As previously mentioned, a spacer wasn't required in this case, as the caddy itself provides the necessary spacing.

After loosening a few screws, the old drive was removed and the new drive was installed within the caddy, ensuring correct connector alignment. The assembly was then carefully slid back into its position.

Secure the screws around the drive or caddy in their original configuration, and finally, reattach the service panel.

Finalizing the Installation Process

Should you have cloned your drive, the completion of the installation is straightforward. You should be able to resume using your computer without interruption, benefiting from the upgraded speed and/or capacity of the new drive.

Adjustments to the BIOS settings may be necessary, typically accessed via the F2 key during startup, though your specific system’s screen or manual should be consulted for precise instructions.
