Effortless Computer Access with Bluetooth Auto-Locking
Consider a scenario where your computer recognizes your presence and automatically unlocks when you approach. Subsequently, it secures itself as you move away. This isn't a product of illusion, but rather the functionality of Bluetooth technology, and its implementation is surprisingly straightforward.
How Bluetooth Auto-Locking Works
The system leverages the Bluetooth connection between your computer and a paired device, typically your smartphone. When the device is within range, the computer remains unlocked.
Conversely, when the Bluetooth signal weakens or disconnects – indicating you’ve moved away – the computer automatically initiates its locking mechanism.
Simple Setup Process
Setting up this feature is generally a simple process. Most operating systems offer native support or readily available applications to facilitate this functionality.
Here’s a general outline of the steps involved:
- Pair your device: Ensure your smartphone or other Bluetooth-enabled device is successfully paired with your computer.
- Install software: Download and install a compatible auto-lock application if your operating system doesn't have built-in support.
- Configure settings: Adjust the range and locking delay within the application's settings to suit your preferences.

Essential Requirements
To implement this system, a computer equipped with a functional Bluetooth connection is necessary.
A secondary device, such as a phone or another compatible gadget, capable of establishing a Bluetooth connection is also required.
For Windows operating systems, either the Microsoft or WIDCOMM Bluetooth stack must be installed.
Specific software is needed to facilitate the process:
- BTProximity for Windows (currently discontinued)
- Proximity and a corresponding AppleScript for OS X (available at no cost)
- BlueProximity for Linux, specifically packaged for Ubuntu (free of charge)
The core principle involves pairing your device with the computer, enabling the computer to identify its unique MAC address.
Both the computer and the connecting device must be set to a "discoverable" mode to allow for successful pairing.
Following this, the appropriate operating system-specific software will manage the locking mechanism.
This method utilizes the OS’s native locking features, avoiding any proprietary or artificial solutions.
A variety of Bluetooth-enabled devices can be used; smartphones, such as an iPhone 4 and a Droid X, have been confirmed to function correctly.
Reports also indicate successful implementation with devices like Wii remotes on both OS X and Linux platforms.
The Windows-based software, BTProximity, is compatible only with the Microsoft and WIDCOMM Bluetooth stacks.
On OS X, the installation and configuration of Proximity are prerequisites for this functionality, with AppleScripts readily available online to execute the process.

BTProximity Configuration Guide
Prior to proceeding, verify that your Bluetooth stack is operational and your intended device is correctly paired with your computer.
Upon downloading and installing BTProximity, the application should initiate automatically. Should it not, locate and launch it from the Start menu.
Access the configuration settings by right-clicking the application icon within the system tray and selecting the "Configure..." option.
The main configuration window will then appear on your screen.
The initial step involves clicking the "Install Unlock" button. Failure to do so will permit your computer to lock upon your departure, but automatic unlocking upon your return will not be enabled. A confirmation message will be displayed upon successful installation.
Acknowledge the installation by clicking "OK", then select the "Manage Credentials" link within the Configuration window.
Enter your username and password, and indicate whether you wish to save these credentials. Considering this setup is for home use, the option to remember the credentials was selected.
To designate your device, click the "Select..." button in the Configuration window. My system experienced difficulties locating devices through this method, so the MAC address of my phone was entered manually. This approach proved successful.
The polling interval can be adjusted from the default of 90 seconds. Reducing this interval excessively may impact your device's battery life, so this should be considered.
Ensure the "Lock when device goes out of range" checkbox is selected, and adjust the number of connection attempts as needed. Devices prone to intermittent connectivity may require a higher number of attempts before the computer locks.
Furthermore, activate the "Unlock when device comes into range" option. Enabling "Fast Unlock" will allow immediate unlocking upon detection of your phone’s MAC address.
The configuration is now complete! Remember that Bluetooth range is subject to environmental factors. In my experience, the system functions reliably at home, locking upon leaving a room and unlocking upon re-entry. If issues arise, consider unchecking "Secure (Ignore unpaired devices)" within the Configuration window.
