Turn Off Character Popups on iOS 9 Keyboard - Guide

Disabling Key Press Previews on the iOS 9 Keyboard

The iOS keyboard traditionally displays a preview of each key as it is pressed, providing visual feedback to the user. This feature, however, was previously unavoidable. Fortunately, iOS 9 introduced the option to deactivate this key preview functionality.

Accessing Keyboard Settings

The process begins by locating and tapping the “Settings” application icon on your iPhone’s Home screen.

Following this, select “General” from the options presented within the Settings menu.

Within the “General” settings, tap on “Keyboard” to access the keyboard customization options.

Turning Off Character Preview

In the “All Keyboards” section, you will find a slider labeled “Character Preview”. Tap this slider to toggle its state.

The slider will change from green to white, indicating that the character preview feature has been successfully disabled.

Benefits of Disabling the Preview

With the “Character Preview” setting turned off, the keyboard will no longer display a preview of each key as it is tapped. This change also offers a subtle security benefit. When enabled, the previews can reveal your keystrokes to onlookers. Disabling the feature helps to obscure your typing from casual observation.

Additional Keyboard Customization Options

iOS 9 provides a range of other keyboard settings for personalization. These include:

  • Re-enabling the older style upper-case touch keyboard.
  • Disabling the predictive text suggestions bar.
  • Muting the keyboard’s audible feedback.

Furthermore, users can discover a less apparent method for utilizing the caps lock function on the iOS 9 keyboard.
