Teach Siri Names: Faster Calling with Contact Recognition

Enhancing Siri's Calling Capabilities with Custom Relationships

Utilizing Siri for phone calls offers a convenient shortcut, however, stating full names like "Call Jane Smith" can feel less intuitive than simply saying "Call Mom." Fortunately, Siri can be personalized to recognize individuals – family members, medical professionals, or any other contact – streamlining the voice calling experience.

Defining Relationships for Easier Contacting

This feature proves especially useful for contacts referred to by roles such as "My doctor" or "My plumber," where recalling the full name might be challenging. Siri achieves this by referencing the nickname field within your iPhone's contacts. Therefore, ensuring these contacts are already saved on your device is a prerequisite.

Initiate Siri by pressing and holding the Home button, or by using the "Hey Siri" voice command if enabled. Then, articulate a statement like "John Smith is my plumber." Remember to replace the example name and relationship with your desired configuration.

You can employ professional titles (plumber, doctor, mechanic), familial connections (mom, dad, sister, best friend), or other descriptive terms. The functionality is most reliable when utilizing a single-word nickname, though this appears to be the primary limitation.

Siri will pause briefly to process your request before seeking confirmation of the relationship.

Confirm the association by tapping or verbally responding with "Yes."

Following confirmation, Siri will display a page summarizing all established relationships.

Testing and Managing Your Customizations

To test the setup, activate Siri and issue a command such as "Call my plumber" (or the relationship you defined). Siri will then initiate the call.

This process allows for quick and effortless contact without needing to navigate your contacts list. Alternatively, nicknames can be manually entered within the contact details themselves, though this method is less interactive.

To remove a previously defined relationship, you must edit the corresponding contact entry. Scroll down the contact page to locate the section listing established relationships.

Unfortunately, removing these associations cannot be accomplished through voice commands directed to Siri; modification of the contact information is required.
