Switch Nest Thermostat: Heating to Cooling & Back - Guide

Transitioning Your Nest Thermostat Between Heating and Cooling Modes
As temperatures rise with the arrival of warmer weather, many homeowners are now shifting their home comfort systems from heating to cooling. This guide details the process for adjusting your Nest Thermostat accordingly.
Remote Control via the Nest App
The Nest Thermostat offers convenient remote control and management through your smartphone. Its intelligent features include learning capabilities, allowing it to adapt to your routines and automatically optimize temperature settings over time.
Despite its advanced functionality, locating specific features can sometimes prove challenging. A common question arises with the change of seasons: how do you switch between heating and cooling modes?
Fortunately, the process is straightforward and can be completed either through the Nest app or directly on the thermostat itself.
Switching Modes on the Nest Thermostat Unit
The Nest Thermostat provides a user-friendly interface for manual adjustments. Changing between heating and cooling is a quick process.
- Access the Quick View menu by pressing the thermostat ring.
- Navigate to the settings option.
- Select “System” and then choose your desired mode – either “Heat,” “Cool,” or “Heat • Cool” for automatic switching.
Selecting “Heat • Cool” allows the Nest Thermostat to intelligently determine whether to activate heating or cooling based on the current temperature and your programmed preferences.
This ensures optimal comfort and energy efficiency throughout the changing seasons.

Managing Your Nest Thermostat Modes
Initiate the process by launching the Nest application on your smartphone. Subsequently, select your Nest Thermostat from the primary display screen.

Locate and tap the "Heat" indicator situated in the lower-left corner of the screen. This indicator may alternatively display "Cool," contingent upon the current thermostat setting.

A dialog box will then appear, presenting you with a selection of operational modes. To activate air conditioning, simply tap "Cool". Conversely, to engage heating, select "Heat". The thermostat can also be deactivated from this menu, and a combined "Heat and Cool" option is also available.

Upon transitioning from Heating to Cooling mode, the thermostat’s target temperature will automatically adjust upwards. Conversely, switching from Cooling to Heating will revert the temperature to the previously set heating value.

Selecting the "Heat-Cool" mode instructs the Nest Thermostat to automatically activate either the furnace or the air conditioner as needed. This eliminates the need to manually select a single operational mode.

With this setting enabled, you can define a desired temperature range for your home. The Nest Thermostat will then autonomously maintain this range, switching between heating and cooling as required, without manual intervention.
Utilizing Your Nest Thermostat
Changing between heating and cooling modes is accomplished through a similar process whether using the app or directly on the Nest Thermostat itself. However, the method differs slightly due to the Nest Thermostat’s smaller display.
Initiate the process by pressing the face of your Nest Thermostat to reveal the primary menu options.
Utilize the silver scroll wheel to navigate to the "Thermostat" setting. A subsequent press on the unit will confirm your selection.
Once in the Thermostat menu, scroll through the available options and choose from "Heat", "Cool", "Heat-Cool", or "Off". This mirrors the selection process within the Nest application.
The "Heat-Cool" mode is particularly useful during transitional seasons. It’s ideal when temperatures fluctuate, offering both heating and cooling capabilities.
This setting minimizes the need for frequent manual adjustments between heating and cooling as weather conditions become less predictable during these periods.
