Switching Apps on Android: A Beginner's Guide

Effortlessly Switching Between Apps on Your Android Device

When utilizing applications on your Android device, minimizing an app and returning to the home screen is easily accomplished with a touch of the Home button. However, a quicker method exists for accessing already-opened applications while currently within another.

Note: This guide is designed for users new to the Android operating system.

Accessing Recent Apps

To transition to a different application while one is already in use, simply tap the Recent Apps icon located at the bottom of your screen.

Important: If you are using a Samsung Galaxy device, a press and hold of the Home button will achieve the same result.

A display of currently open applications will appear, presented as thumbnails. You can navigate through these open apps by swiping up and down (in Portrait mode) or side to side (in Landscape mode). Selecting an app by touching its thumbnail will immediately switch you to it.

Alternative App Switching Solutions

Should the standard Android methods for app switching not suit your preferences, numerous applications are available offering alternative and potentially more convenient ways to manage open apps.

As an illustration, we will explore Switchr, a freely available app from the Google Play Store. Locate Switchr within the Play Store and initiate the installation process by tapping Install.

Upon completion of the installation, an icon will be added to your home screen on a Nexus device. Tap this icon to launch the application.

Note: For Samsung Galaxy device users, access the Apps icon to view all installed applications. Find and tap the Switchr app to open it.

Once the title screen is displayed, tap Next to proceed through the introductory screens. Alternatively, you can bypass the introduction by selecting Skip.

A prompt will appear, encouraging you to test the swipe gesture to activate Switchr.

Note: It may require several attempts to successfully execute the swiping action.

After successfully activating Switchr, the app will ask if you wish to configure its settings. Tap Configure in the lower-right corner of the screen.

You can customize which edges of the screen trigger the Switchr app to appear, displaying a list of open applications. To do so, navigate to the Switchr General settings and tap Setup edge triggers under Edge Swipe.

Drag your finger along one or both sides of the screen to define the trigger areas for accessing open apps. Utilizing both sides is recommended, as some applications may incorporate drag-in menus on at least one side.

Note: The initial access to the Setup edge triggers screen will display a How-to guide illustrating the setup process.

An edge trigger cannot be positioned at the top of the screen due to the presence of the action bar. Furthermore, a trigger on the bottom of the screen requires the purchase of the Switchr Pro version ($1.99).

Once the edge triggers are configured to your liking, tap Okay in the lower-right corner to save your changes and return to the main Settings screen.

Note: A Tips dialog box may appear, offering guidance on setting up the edge triggers. Configure your triggers first, then acknowledge the tips by tapping the check mark to close the dialog and return to the setup screen.

You also have the option to enable haptic feedback (vibration) when activating a trigger. Simply select the Haptic feedback checkbox. Additional settings are accessible by tapping More Settings.

If you choose to enable Haptic feedback, you can adjust the Vibration duration (in milliseconds) by dragging the blue dot left or right. Selecting High resolution icons will display higher quality icons when switching apps, though this may slightly reduce responsiveness.

When you have finalized your settings, tap the Home button to return to the Home screen.

To switch to another app while currently using one, swipe in from the designated edge of the screen (where you defined an edge trigger), maintaining contact with the screen. Without lifting your finger, move it over the app icons to select the desired application, then release your finger. The chosen app will then open.

You can remove recently opened apps from the list by swiping them sideways, one at a time.
