While professional, feature-rich plans are available for a fee, Prey’s core tracking functionality is offered entirely without charge. The free tier permits connection of up to three devices to a single account.

A limit of ten location reports per device is also imposed on the free service. This ensures basic tracking needs are met without requiring a subscription.

Upon installation of Prey, users will be guided through the process of either establishing a new account or accessing an existing one with their credentials.

Following successful login, Prey will become operational immediately. By default, Prey functions as a service within the Windows operating system.

Configuration options can be accessed by launching the "Configure Prey" shortcut, which is located within the Prey program folder in the Start menu.

To enhance responsiveness in the event of loss, the frequency of check-ins can be adjusted. Navigate to "Options for Execution" and modify the "Frequency of reports and actions" setting.

Increasing this frequency will result in more frequent location updates. This can be particularly useful for quickly locating a misplaced laptop.

Locating a Lost Laptop: A Guide

Access to your account on the Prey project’s website allows you to monitor your devices. Simply log in using the credentials previously configured on your computer. You will then be presented with a list of your registered computers and any other connected devices.

Should your laptop become lost, navigate to its entry within the Prey control panel. Change the status indicator from "OK" to "Missing." It’s important to note that Prey only initiates tracking when a device is reported as missing, preserving battery life and data usage.

Enabling Location Tracking

Ensure the Geo feature is activated. This utilizes either the laptop’s built-in GPS capabilities or the identification of surrounding Wi-Fi networks to pinpoint its location. Accurate location reporting relies on this feature.

Prey also allows for the execution of specific actions remotely. For instance, you can trigger an audible alarm, which is particularly useful if the laptop is misplaced within a limited area. However, remember that this function requires the laptop to be powered on and connected to the internet.

The Tracking Process

Upon marking your laptop as missing, its status will update to "Tracked, waiting for report." When the Prey software on the laptop next connects to the Prey server, it will receive instructions to generate a report. Alerts are only delivered if the laptop is online and the software remains installed.

An "on-demand" report request is available, but this feature is restricted to users with a paid subscription. The free version will generate a report automatically within a short timeframe.

Reviewing the Report

Once a report is generated, it will be accessible on the Reports tab. This report contains the data you specified during setup. This includes the laptop’s geographical location, network details, IP address, a screenshot of the desktop, and potentially a webcam image of the current user.

This collected information can be instrumental in recovering your laptop or providing valuable evidence to law enforcement in the event of theft.

Alternative Tracking Solutions
