Free Website Down SMS Alerts - Setup Guide

Free Website Downtime Monitoring with Google Tools
Numerous services provide website uptime monitoring and SMS alerts to notify you when your site becomes unavailable. However, the majority of these solutions require a paid subscription.
A resourceful method leveraging Google Docs and the SMS functionality within Google Calendar allows for the rapid establishment of complimentary text message notifications upon website downtime.
How the System Works
The core of this system involves a script that periodically attempts to establish a connection with your specified website(s) at five-minute intervals.
Should a connection fail, you will be promptly alerted via both email and text message, enabling swift issue resolution.
Important Considerations
While the setup itself is entirely free, it’s crucial to be aware that your mobile carrier may impose charges for receiving SMS messages.
It is recommended to verify your carrier’s policy regarding incoming text message fees to avoid unexpected costs.
- Confirm with your cellular provider if they charge for receiving text messages.
- This method provides immediate notification of website downtime.
- The script checks website connectivity every five minutes.
This approach offers a cost-effective solution for maintaining awareness of your website’s availability without incurring subscription fees.
Linking Your Phone Number to Google Calendar
To begin, navigate to your Google Calendar and locate the gear icon in the upper-right corner. Click this icon and choose Settings from the dropdown menu.
Within the Settings menu, select the Mobile Setup tab. This is where you’ll manage your phone number association.
Choose your country from the provided options and then input your mobile phone number. This will enable SMS-based reminders.
In most cases, you won't need to manually select your mobile carrier. Google automatically supports a wide range of providers; a list of supported carriers can be found on Google’s support pages.
After entering your phone number, click the Send Verification Code button. A verification code will be sent to your phone via SMS.
Enter the received verification code into the designated field on the page to finalize the setup process. Successful entry will complete the association.

With your phone number linked, you can leverage Google Calendar’s reminder functionality to receive SMS notifications for upcoming events.
Furthermore, it’s possible to create new calendar events directly through SMS messaging, offering a convenient way to manage your schedule.
Configuring the Website Monitoring System
The following steps detail the setup process for the Website Monitor script. Begin by creating a duplicate copy of the Website Monitor spreadsheet within your Google Docs environment. A link to the original script’s source code is also available for review.
Following this, activate the script by clicking the Website Monitor button located in the Google Docs toolbar and then selecting the 'Initialize' option. You will then be asked to grant the script necessary permissions, including the ability to manage calendar events and dispatch email notifications.

After initialization is complete, input your email address in the designated 'Email Address' field. Subsequently, enter the URL(s) of the website(s) you wish to monitor into the 'Website URLs' box. Multiple website addresses can be entered, separated by a comma and a space.
Should you prefer to receive alerts solely via email, configure the 'SMS Notifications' setting to 'No'; this will disable text message notifications.

Once your preferred settings have been provided, re-access the Website Monitor menu and choose 'Start Monitoring' to begin the monitoring process.

The Google Apps script will operate continuously, even when the spreadsheet is not actively open, performing checks on your websites at five-minute intervals. In the event of a website outage, you will receive both an email notification and a text message, facilitated by the creation of a calendar event with a reminder.

Alternative Website Monitoring Solutions
Beyond the methods discussed, several other tools are available for website monitoring. SiteMonitor, for instance, is a complimentary desktop application designed to verify website availability and deliver desktop alerts upon detecting downtime.
Pingdom represents another viable choice. Although primarily offering subscription-based services, Pingdom provides a free tier capable of monitoring a single website and issuing up to twenty SMS notifications. This functionality is, however, less extensive than the previously described script for users seeking a cost-free solution.
