Android Custom Ringtones: Set Unique Tones for Contacts

Customizing Ringtones for Specific Callers on Android
The desire to identify incoming callers before answering is common, and assigning custom ringtones to individual contacts is a straightforward solution. This allows for instant recognition – for example, a specific song signaling a call from your spouse.
Knowing which tune is playing can immediately alert you to the caller's identity, such as a particular melody indicating a call from your manager.
Fortunately, Android provides a relatively simple method for achieving this personalization.
Understanding Potential Variations
It’s important to note that the exact steps involved may differ depending on the phone's manufacturer and any custom user interface (UI) they’ve implemented.
Providing instructions for every Android device is impractical, but this guide will cover the process on stock Android, Samsung, and LG phones, offering a general understanding applicable to most devices.
Getting Started with Custom Ringtones
Let's begin the process of assigning unique ringtones to your contacts.
Here's a breakdown of how to customize ringtones on different Android devices:
- Stock Android: The process generally involves editing the contact directly and selecting a custom ringtone from the phone's storage.
- Samsung Devices: Samsung's interface often includes a dedicated section within the contact editing screen for ringtone customization.
- LG Devices: LG phones typically allow ringtone assignment through the contact details screen, offering access to stored audio files.
By following these guidelines, you can easily personalize your Android experience and instantly recognize who is calling.
Customizing Contact Ringtones on Standard Android Devices
Personalizing ringtones for individual contacts is achievable through either the Phone or Contacts application. As the Contacts app functions as an extension of the dialer, both ultimately utilize the same underlying system.
Begin by launching either the Phone or Contacts app and locating the specific contact for whom you wish to assign a unique ringtone. For demonstration purposes, we will configure a custom tone for Barack Obama.
Select the edit icon, typically represented by a pencil, to access the “Edit contact” options. Then, tap the three-dot menu located in the upper right corner of the screen.

Within this menu, you will find the “Set ringtone” option. Selecting this will initiate the ringtone customization process.

This action opens the Ringtones menu, presenting a selection of available tones. Choose the desired ringtone for the contact. Knowing Barack Obama’s musical preferences, we’ll assign the song “Through Oblivion” by In Flames as his ringtone.

Confirm your selection by tapping the check mark, typically found near the overflow menu.

The process is now complete. We anticipate the next call from our friend, Barack Obama.
Customizing Contact Ringtones on Samsung Galaxy Phones
Samsung Galaxy devices offer a convenient way to personalize incoming calls. Users can assign unique ringtones to specific contacts using either the Phone or Contacts application. For this demonstration, the Phone app will be utilized, as it provides direct access to contact management.
To begin, launch the Phone or Contacts app on your Samsung device. Then, locate and select the contact for whom you wish to customize the ringtone. A specific contact, Katy Perry, will be used as an example for this process.

After opening the contact’s profile, tap the “Edit” button situated in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Within the edit screen, select the “More” option. Scroll downwards to the very bottom of the displayed settings.

Tap on the “Ringtone” selection. A suitable ringtone, such as Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood,” can be chosen and assigned to the contact.

Following the ringtone selection, tap the “Save” option located at the top of the screen to finalize the changes.
The process is now complete. The assigned custom ringtone will play whenever the specified contact initiates a call.
Customizing Contact Ringtones on LG Smartphones
The following instructions apply to the LG V10, however, the procedure should be largely consistent across most contemporary LG mobile devices. Notably, this customization can be performed directly within either the Phone or Contacts application, mirroring functionality found on other Android phones.
For demonstration purposes, we will assign a unique ringtone to a contact named Michael Jordan. This allows for immediate identification of calls from this specific individual, which is particularly useful for those with busy schedules.
Begin by launching either the Phone or Contacts app and selecting the contact you wish to modify. Tap the pencil-shaped icon located in the upper-right corner of the screen to access the “Edit contact” options.

Scroll to the bottom of the contact editing screen. Here, you will find two distinct options: “Ringtone” and “Notification sound.” These settings allow for personalized audio cues for incoming calls and notifications.

Given Michael Jordan’s iconic jersey number, selecting a ringtone referencing “23” seems appropriate. The track “23” by Mike Will Made-It is a fitting choice for this purpose.

After selecting your desired ringtone, confirm your choice by tapping “OK.” Subsequently, save the changes to the contact by pressing “Save.”

The process is now complete. The custom ringtone has been successfully assigned.
The procedure for setting custom ringtones within Android is generally quite simple. Once you become proficient in extracting ringtones from your preferred music, a wide range of personalization options become available.
I must now return to the task of creating contact entries for individuals with whom I maintain only a superficial acquaintance.
