iOS Alarm: Vibrate Only - No Sound Guide

iOS Mute Functionality and Alarm Behavior

Typically, when the mute switch on an iOS device is activated, incoming phone calls and text messages are signaled by vibration rather than the designated ringtone.

However, it’s important to note that alarms are designed to override the mute setting.

They will consistently produce sound, regardless of whether the device is muted or not.

Creating a Silent Alarm

For users who prefer vibration over sound for their alarms, a workaround exists.

This involves the creation of a custom, silent ringtone.

By assigning this silent ringtone to an alarm, the device will vibrate instead of emitting an audible alert.

This allows for personalized control over how alarms are signaled on an iOS device.

Creating a Silent Ringtone for Your iPhone

Related information can be found in our guide: How to Add Custom Ringtones to Your iPhone.

Customizing ringtones on your iOS device is a straightforward process. However, Apple does not natively provide silent ringtone options. While several are available for purchase through the Apple Store, adding a new ringtone without a computer and iTunes typically requires a purchase.

Alternatively, utilizing iTunes opens up further possibilities. You can generate your own silent ringtone using audio editing software such as Audacity, or through dedicated ringtone creator applications available on your phone—simply recording a brief period of silence. This method, however, can be somewhat cumbersome.

To simplify this process, we have provided a pre-made silent ringtone for your convenience. Download the file and extract its contents. Then, import the file into iTunes, either by dragging it directly or opening it from within the application.

iTunes will automatically recognize the file as a ringtone due to its M4R file extension and will place it in the appropriate location. Subsequently, connect your iPhone to your computer and navigate to the device settings within iTunes.

Configuring an Alarm Utilizing a Silent Ringtone

Having successfully created a silent ringtone for your device, the next step involves its application to an alarm. Initiate the Clock application and navigate to the Alarm section.

This completes the process. While utilizing iTunes is necessary, it is only a temporary requirement. The installed silent ringtone can also be assigned to individual contacts, preventing audible ringing during their calls.
