Rooting Your Nexus Device with the Nexus Root Toolkit

The Nexus Root Toolkit provides a streamlined method for gaining root access on various Nexus devices, including the Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus, and Nexus S. Achieving root access unlocks the potential to utilize applications that require permissions beyond the standard Android operating system’s security restrictions.

Understanding the Benefits of Rooting

Previously, we detailed Android rooting procedures, but encountered compatibility issues for numerous users. Providing universally applicable instructions across the diverse landscape of Android devices presents a significant challenge. This particular method is specifically designed and optimized for Nexus devices, ensuring a higher success rate.

Important Considerations Before You Begin

It’s crucial to understand that this process will result in a complete data wipe on your Nexus device. Therefore, a comprehensive backup of your important data is absolutely necessary before proceeding. The restoration of your data will be required following the completion of the rooting process.

Unlocking the Bootloader

During this procedure, the bootloader of your Nexus device will be unlocked. This unlocking is a prerequisite for installing custom ROMs, offering further customization options and control over your device’s software.

Steps Involved

  • Back up all important data from your Nexus device.
  • Download and install the Nexus Root Toolkit.
  • Follow the toolkit’s instructions carefully to unlock the bootloader and root your device.

Successfully completing these steps will grant you root access, enabling you to explore the full capabilities of your Nexus device.

Installing the Nexus Root Toolkit

The Nexus Root Toolkit, created by WugFresh, is available for download at this location. After the download completes, execute the .exe file to begin the installation process. Upon installation, the toolkit will automatically start.

Within the toolkit's interface, it will be necessary to specify the model of your device and the Android version currently installed.

Identifying Your Device

If uncertainty exists regarding your specific device model, navigate to the Settings application on your phone or tablet. Then, select either "About Tablet" or "About Phone" to view detailed device information.

This section provides crucial details for accurate toolkit configuration.

Driver Installation

A crucial step in the rooting process involves ensuring your computer possesses the necessary drivers for communication with your Nexus device. This can often be a complex undertaking. Fortunately, the Nexus Root Toolkit offers automated driver configuration. Should this automated process fail, the toolkit provides guided instructions for manual driver setup.

To unlock and root your Nexus, USB debugging must be enabled. Navigate to the Settings menu, then select Developer Options. Activate the slider at the top of the Developer Options screen and subsequently enable the USB debugging checkbox.

Initiate the driver installation process by clicking the "Full Driver Installation Guide – Automatic + Manual" button within the Nexus Root Toolkit interface.

Begin by attempting the "Automatic Driver Configuration" option, particularly if you are utilizing Windows 7. Ideally, this will resolve all driver-related issues automatically.

When prompted, connect your Nexus device to your computer using the provided USB cable. Allow Windows to complete the driver installation, then click "OK".

Should the automatic configuration prove unsuccessful, you will need to proceed with the manual driver setup as outlined in the Driver Setup window. Follow each step sequentially, adhering to the provided instructions. It’s worth noting that a manual installation was required in my experience, involving the installation of Samsung drivers, despite the Nexus 7 being an ASUS product.

Manual Driver Configuration Details

The manual process guides users through the necessary steps to establish a connection. Each instruction is designed to be followed in a specific order.

The toolkit will provide detailed guidance throughout the manual driver installation. This ensures that even users with limited technical expertise can successfully configure their system.

Data Backup Prior to Rooting

The subsequent steps will result in a complete device wipe. Therefore, creating a backup of your data is strongly recommended beforehand. Initiate the backup process by selecting the Backup button.

An Android backup file, encompassing your applications and associated data, can be generated by clicking the Create Android Backup File button. Confirm the backup by tapping the Back up prompt displayed on your device.

Furthermore, it is advisable to utilize the Backup data/media function. This ensures that all media files stored on your device are also safely preserved.

Unlocking and Rooting Your Nexus Device

Prior to proceeding, it is crucial to create a backup of your Nexus device. Once the backup is complete, utilize the Unlock button to initiate the unlocking procedure. Remember that unlocking will erase all data on your device, so a recent backup is essential.

A prompt will appear on your Nexus, requesting confirmation to unlock the bootloader. Accepting this prompt will unlock the bootloader and simultaneously wipe your device, restoring it to its original factory settings.

Post-Unlock Setup

Following the reset, you will need to complete the initial setup process on your Nexus. Ensure that USB debugging mode is re-enabled before continuing with the rooting process.

After re-enabling USB debugging, a choice will be presented: whether or not to flash ClockworkMod (CWM). Select 'Do not flash CWM' if you do not require this custom recovery, and then proceed by clicking the Root button.

The rooting process will then begin. Upon completion, locate and open the SuperSU application on your Nexus device.

Finalizing Root Access

Within the SuperSU application, it is necessary to update the SU binary. This step ensures the proper functioning of root access.

Next, launch the BusyBox application. Grant it the necessary root permissions, and then tap the Install button. With this final step completed, your Nexus device is now successfully rooted.

Data Restoration Process

Following the rooting procedure, you will likely proceed to restore your Nexus device using the backups previously generated. Initiate the restoration by selecting the Restore option.

Utilize the functionalities for restoring Android backups and restoring data/media. Specifically, choose the backup files that were created in a prior step.

Once the Full restore screen is displayed on your device, confirm the operation by tapping the Restore my data button. Accept the prompt to begin the restoration of your applications and associated data.

The restoration process will then commence, reinstating your device to its previous state.
