Remove BoBrowser Adware - Malware Removal Guide

BoBrowser: A Deceptive Chrome Replacement Loaded with Adware
During evaluations of various freeware download platforms – undertaken to demonstrate the prevalence of bundled unwanted software – we encountered a particularly malicious program known as BoBrowser.
This malware operates by substituting the genuine Chrome browser with a visually similar imposter, heavily laden with intrusive adware.
The Deceptive Tactics of BoBrowser
The screenshot reveals that the browser displayed is not, in fact, Chrome, but rather Chromium that has been pre-equipped with malicious advertisements.
These advertisements aggressively commandeer the browsing experience, significantly obstructing access to legitimate content.
As illustrated on the Amazon webpage, the sheer volume of inserted ads renders the actual content almost invisible.
Removal and Cleanup
While removing BoBrowser is achievable, the provided uninstaller proves to be unreliable and incomplete.
Therefore, a thorough manual cleanup process is necessary to fully eliminate all traces of the malware and its associated components.
It's important to note that many download sites actively distribute unwanted software alongside legitimate programs.
This practice highlights the risks associated with downloading software from untrusted sources.

Removing the BoBrowser Adware / Malware
Initially, it is recommended to right-click the BoBrowser icon if it’s pinned to your taskbar. From the context menu, select the option to "Unpin this program from taskbar."
Following this, locate the BoBrowser icon within the system tray. Right-click on this icon and choose the "Exit" option. This step is crucial for successful removal.
Next, access the Control Panel on your system. Navigate to the "Uninstall a program" feature and select BoBrowser to initiate the uninstallation process.
During the uninstallation, ensure both checkboxes are selected. A dialog box may appear indicating the program has stopped working; click "Close" to proceed.
While this removes the majority of the BoBrowser components, some residual files may remain. Further cleanup is therefore necessary.
Launch a file explorer window and enter %localappdata% into the address bar. A folder named "BoBrowser" will be visible; this folder should be deleted.
Finally, open your preferred web browser, such as Chrome. Set this browser as the default, as the BoBrowser uninstaller often leaves default settings in a non-functional state.
Post-Infection Cleanup with Malwarebytes
Following the removal of any malware or adware, a comprehensive system scan using Malwarebytes is highly recommended. This will ensure the complete elimination of associated adware and spyware components.
While BoBrowser isn't strictly classified as "malware" by conventional definitions, Malwarebytes is capable of identifying and removing its traces. It will also detect other potentially unwanted programs that may have been installed concurrently.
Utilizing Malwarebytes for Thorough Removal
The free version of Malwarebytes is sufficient for detecting and removing these threats. A paid subscription offers ongoing protection, but isn't essential for a one-time cleanup.
A free trial of the premium version is also available, providing flexibility in your approach.
After the scan is finished, select the "Apply Actions" button to initiate the removal process. This will significantly improve your system's cleanliness.
A system reboot is generally advisable after the cleanup. If no further issues are detected, your computer should then be functioning normally.
