Managing Recent Applications in Android

The “Recent Apps” screen provides a convenient way to quickly switch between applications you’ve recently utilized. This functionality mirrors the Alt + Tab key combination found in Windows operating systems.

Pressing the “Home” or “Back” buttons on your Android device doesn’t fully terminate an application’s process. Instead, the app continues to operate in the background.

Why Remove Apps from the Recent Apps List?

You might choose to clear some applications from the “Recent Apps” list to streamline access to frequently used programs. Alternatively, doing so can help free up system memory.

However, Android is engineered to maintain a relatively full RAM allocation. The system intelligently manages memory, automatically closing less active or unused applications when more RAM is required for new processes.

Removing Apps: A Step-by-Step Guide

This guide details how to remove an application from the “Recent Apps” screen in Android. The instructions are illustrated using examples from a Nexus 7 and a Samsung Galaxy S4.

It’s important to note that accessing the “Recent Apps” screen can vary slightly depending on the device model. The Galaxy S4 also features a unique option within the “Recent Apps” screen not present on the Nexus 7.

Nexus 7 Instructions

On the Nexus 7, initiate the “Recent Apps” screen by touching the designated button, as highlighted in the image. This will display large thumbnails representing your recently used applications, each accompanied by its corresponding icon.

To remove an app from this list, simply press and hold your finger on the app’s thumbnail until a context menu appears. Then, select “Remove from list” from the displayed options.

Note: The popup menu also includes an “App info” option. Selecting this will take you to the “App info” screen, where you can manage the application further, including force stopping, clearing data, or uninstalling it.

You can also dismiss an app by swiping it off the screen. In Portrait mode, swipe the thumbnail to the right or left. If you are in Landscape mode, swipe the thumbnail either up or down.

Samsung Galaxy S4 (and other Galaxy S series) Instructions

On a Samsung Galaxy S4, or another phone in the Galaxy S series, press and hold the Home button to reveal the “Recent Apps” list. From here, you can remove an app by holding down its thumbnail and choosing “Remove from list,” mirroring the process on a Nexus device.

Swiping the thumbnail off the screen also serves as a quick method for removal.

Furthermore, Galaxy S series phones offer a “Close all” button, which allows you to instantly remove all applications from the “Recent Apps” list.
