Nest Notifications for Furnace & A/C Issues - How To

Protecting Your Home with Nest Thermostat Alerts

Being away from home when your heating or cooling system malfunctions can lead to significant issues. With a Nest Thermostat, you can receive timely notifications if a problem arises, allowing for prompt intervention and preventing further damage.

Potential Problems with HVAC Failure

A malfunctioning furnace or air conditioner isn't just an inconvenience. It can trigger a cascade of secondary problems. For example, a furnace breakdown risks frozen and burst water pipes. Conversely, air conditioning failure during summer heat can endanger pets left unattended.

Fortunately, utilizing the IFTTT online service, you can be alerted via your phone whenever your Nest Thermostat detects temperatures outside your preset range. If your air conditioning is set to 74 degrees, and the thermostat registers 78 degrees, this indicates a potential issue.

Getting Started with IFTTT

If you are new to IFTTT, familiarize yourself with the platform by creating an account and connecting your desired applications. Our guide provides detailed instructions for this initial setup. Once completed, return here to configure the necessary recipes.

We have pre-built the required recipes for your convenience. If you are experienced with IFTTT, simply click the “Add” button below to activate them. One recipe is designed for winter operation with the furnace, and the other for summer with the air conditioning. Ensure the Nest Thermostat and SMS channel are connected.

Customizing Your Recipes

To personalize the recipes – perhaps to utilize a different notification method than SMS – follow these steps. Begin by navigating to the IFTTT homepage and clicking “My Recipes” at the top of the page.

Next, select “Create a Recipe”.

Click on the blue “this” link.

Search for “Nest Thermostat” in the search box or locate it within the available products and services. Select it when found.

On the "Choose a Trigger" page, click on "Temperature rises above".

On the subsequent page, specify your Nest Thermostat under "Which device?" and define a temperature threshold. You will receive a notification when the indoor temperature exceeds this value. Also, choose Fahrenheit or Celsius under "Degrees in".

Click on the blue “that” link to establish the action triggered when the condition is met.

Type “SMS” into the search box or find it among the available services. Select it when located.

Click on "Send me an SMS".

Compose the message you wish to receive upon triggering the alert and then click "Create Action".

On the following page, assign a custom title to your recipe if desired, and then click “Create Recipe”.

Your recipe is now active! You can create a similar recipe for winter conditions. Instead of selecting "Temperature rises above", choose "Temperature drops below".

Enter a temperature a few degrees lower than your heating setpoint. This will trigger a notification if the indoor temperature falls below that level, indicating a potential furnace issue.
