Initiating the Process
To begin, start Avidemux and load your desired video file through the File menu. Multiple video files can be merged seamlessly by opening them subsequently, utilizing the Append function. Each additional video selected will be appended to the end of the currently loaded video.
Fundamental Video Editing Procedures
To reposition, duplicate, or remove a segment of the video, initial selection is required using the controls located at the video's base. Precise positioning can be achieved by dragging the slider, utilizing the seek buttons, or directly inputting a specific frame or timecode.
Alternatively, the Play button can be engaged, followed by a click on Stop when the desired point is reached.
Selecting Video Sections
Once the desired location is pinpointed, the current frame can be marked using the A or B buttons. The A button designates the start of the selection, while the B button defines its endpoint.
A blue rectangle on the seek bar visually indicates the currently selected video segment.
Editing Operations
The functionalities within the Edit menu operate exclusively on the currently selected portion of the video. Operations such as cutting, copying, and pasting are available.
When Paste is utilized, the selected segment is inserted into the video at the current playback position. The Delete function permanently removes the selected segment.
Reverting Changes
Should you wish to undo your editing actions, the Reset Edits button provides a means to revert to the original state.
Transcoding in Avidemux
Avidemux, by its default operation, performs video editing without altering the original file format. This ensures no quality is lost during the editing process – a feature represented by the "Copy" setting.
However, the application of filters, whether to the video or audio streams, necessitates a process of transcoding.
Selecting Output Formats
New formats for both video and audio can be chosen through the respective dropdown menus located on the left-hand side of the Avidemux interface.
- The Video box controls the output video format.
- The Audio box manages the output audio format.
These selections determine how the video and audio will be re-encoded during the transcoding process.
Customizing Encoding Settings
Each section, both Video and Audio, includes a "Configure" button. This button grants access to detailed encoding settings.
While the default settings are generally sufficient for most users, the "Configure" button allows for granular control over the encoding parameters.
Users can adjust settings such as bitrate, codecs, and other encoding-specific options to fine-tune the output quality and file size.
Filters
Filters provide a means to alter either the audio or video components. To begin utilizing them, simply click the Filters button within the corresponding audio or video section.
The Audio filters dialog enables adjustments such as audio synchronization with the video, modification of perceived loudness, and the execution of various other audio operations.
Conversely, the Video Filters dialog presents a significantly broader range of options. Within it, you’ll find tools for resizing, cropping, fading, and even more specialized effects, such as a “useless whirlwind effect.”
To implement a filter, first select it from the available list. Then, click the Add button, which is represented by a plus sign.
This action will reveal the specific options associated with the chosen filter, allowing for customized adjustments.
Each filter that is added will be displayed within the Active Filters section. Should you wish to apply a filter to only a designated portion of the video, select the filter and then click the Partial button.
This functionality allows for the creation of transitions, such as fading sections in or out.
Once you have selected all desired filters, click the Close button. It’s important to note that these changes are not immediately applied.
The filters will be implemented during the video export process.
Exporting Your Video Project
The process of exporting your finalized video is initiated through the File menu. Select "Save" and then choose the "Save Video" option.
This action will begin the encoding of your video, preparing it for storage on your computer.
Avidemux will then proceed to encode the video and save the resulting file to your designated storage location.
