Publish Podcast to iTunes - Podcast Generator

Launching Your Own Podcast: A Comprehensive Guide
Creating and publishing a podcast might seem daunting, especially if it's a new endeavor. This was precisely the challenge faced by Dave, Justin, and myself when we initiated a weekly technology-focused podcast, Technophilia.
Having approached our first year and nearing 50 episodes, we’ve even expanded to include live broadcasts. This guide details the steps you can take to publish your own podcast to iTunes.
Key Steps in Podcast Publication
The process of podcast publication fundamentally involves two core components. These are establishing storage for your podcast files and subsequently informing iTunes about its existence.
It’s important to understand that iTunes does not function as a podcast host. They do not provide storage for podcast audio files, nor do they cover the bandwidth costs associated with downloads.
The responsibility for hosting, upkeep, and bandwidth expenses rests entirely with the podcast creator. iTunes serves as a directory, simplifying the process for listeners to discover, subscribe to, and receive updates regarding new episodes.
Utilizing Podcast Generator for Simplified Feed Creation
We will demonstrate the process using Podcast Generator, a user-friendly, open-source, and free web application designed for self-hosting.
This tool effectively manages the creation of your podcast feed. Having exceeded 100,000 downloads and boasting a considerable history, Podcast Generator represents a reliable and proven solution.
Why Choose Podcast Generator?
- Ease of Use: The application is designed for simplicity, even for those with limited technical expertise.
- Open Source & Free: No licensing fees or ongoing costs are associated with its use.
- Self-Hosted: You maintain complete control over your podcast data and feed.
- Proven Reliability: A large user base and extensive download numbers attest to its stability.
By leveraging Podcast Generator, the technical complexities of podcast feed creation are significantly reduced, allowing you to focus on content creation and audience engagement.
Prerequisites
To begin, you will require both an iTunes Account and the iTunes software installed on your system.
Furthermore, web hosting is necessary, complete with FTP access and the ability to execute PHP scripts.
Database Considerations
A significant benefit of utilizing Podcast Generator is its independence from MySQL databases. This distinguishes it from many other self-hosted podcasting platforms.
Therefore, a MySQL database is not a mandatory component for the successful operation of Podcast Generator.
This streamlined requirement makes Podcast Generator a particularly attractive option for users seeking a simpler self-hosting solution.
Alternative Publishing Methods
A previous, concise guide detailed the process using Wordpress; should you possess familiarity with, or an existing installation of, Wordpress as a blogging platform, it likely represents the optimal solution.
For those seeking a streamlined approach, Podcast Generator presents itself as a viable option.

Being an open source project, Podcast Generator is available without cost, though its functionality is deliberately minimal. Its primary purpose is the creation of a fundamental website designed solely for hosting your podcast feed.
If your sole requirement is to distribute a feed to iTunes, without the need for advanced features, this tool offers a rapid and uncomplicated setup process.
It’s important to recognize that neither Podcast Generator nor iTunes natively provides download statistics. Consequently, if you choose this method, you will need to rely on your web server's access logs to gather usage data.
Podcast Generator incorporates an mp3 web player for audio content. While it supports the generation of video feeds, a dedicated player for video playback is not included within the software.
Acquiring and Installing Podcast Generator
The most recent iteration of Podcast Generator, version 1.4 as of this writing, can be obtained from Sourceforge. Once downloaded, extract the contents of the archive.
Subsequently, upload the extracted files to your web server; the root directory is a suitable location.

Access the setup process by navigating to the server's address in your web browser. It is crucial to remove the /setup directory following completion of the installation.

Should permission-related issues arise, manually configure the necessary permissions for the directories as indicated by the system.

New podcast episodes can be added utilizing the Admin functionality. However, be aware that some hosting environments may impose a 2MB file size restriction.
If this limitation is encountered, simply upload new episodes directly to the "media" folder via FTP. PodcastGenerator will automatically detect the new file and request confirmation for its inclusion.

iTunes Submission Process
Within the Podcast Generator’s administrative interface, a direct link is provided to the podcast submission section of the iTunes Store. Utilizing this link is recommended, as it automatically populates the submission form with your podcast’s feed URL.
Completing the submission is generally straightforward. However, several key points should be considered:
- Accurate metadata is crucial; avoid misrepresenting your content’s suitability for audiences. For instance, if your podcast contains explicit language, do not categorize it as child-friendly.
- A minimum of one podcast episode must be published prior to submission. "Pre-submission" of a podcast before its official launch is not permitted.
- Following submission, you will receive a confirmation email indicating that your podcast is under review. Approval and listing typically take between a few days and one week.
- Apple iTunes periodically rescans podcasts, approximately once daily. Consequently, newly published episodes may not be immediately visible to all subscribers.
If rapid updates are essential, advise your audience to subscribe directly to your podcast feed rather than relying solely on iTunes.

Simplified Distribution
The process of submitting a podcast is remarkably simple. Becoming a content creator and managing distribution has never been more accessible.
Ultimately, the most important question remains: does your podcast offer compelling and engaging content?
