Enhancing iOS Security with Alphanumeric Passcodes

Upon initial setup of an iOS device running iOS 9 or later, a six-digit passcode is requested. However, it’s possible to significantly improve security by utilizing a more robust alphanumeric password – one incorporating both letters and numbers – on your iOS devices.

Prior to implementing an alphanumeric passcode, it is crucial to devise a strong password that you can readily recall. The strength of your potential password can be assessed using resources like GRC’s Password Haystacks page.

Changing Your Passcode

To transition to an alphanumeric passcode on your iOS device, begin by selecting the “Settings” application from your Home screen.

Within the Settings menu, tap on “Touch ID & Passcode”.

You will be prompted to enter your existing numeric passcode. Do so on the “Enter Passcode” screen.

On the “Touch ID & Passcode” screen, select the “Change Passcode” option.

Re-enter your current passcode on the “Change Passcode” screen for verification.

Instead of defining a new numeric passcode, tap on “Passcode Options”.

Selecting an Alphanumeric Passcode

You will be presented with three passcode options: a 4-digit numeric code, a custom numeric code, and a custom alphanumeric code. Choose “Custom Alphanumeric Code”.

Input your desired new alphanumeric passcode. Confirm your entry by tapping “return” on the keyboard or “Next” in the screen’s upper-right corner.

To ensure accuracy, re-enter your new alphanumeric passcode for verification.

Following these steps, a keyboard will appear when your iPhone is locked, allowing you to enter your alphanumeric passcode.

This same process can also be used to revert to a six-digit passcode, or to a four-digit or custom-length numeric passcode, though the latter are not recommended for optimal security.
