Typically, Firefox is configured to completely shut down when its final tab is closed. However, users can modify this behavior if they prefer to keep the browser running.

Disabling this default action ensures that closing the last tab will instead reopen a new tab, presenting the New Tab page. This can be beneficial for those who wish to maintain their browsing session.

Accessing the Configuration Setting

The necessary setting isn't found within Firefox’s conventional settings menus. To access it, type about:config into the browser’s address bar and press Enter.

A warning message will appear, indicating potential risks to your warranty and advising caution. Proceed by clicking “I’ll be careful, I promise” if you understand the implications.

Locating and Modifying the Setting

Within the about:config interface, use the Search box to find the relevant setting. Begin typing closeWindowWithLastTab.

The browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab setting will then be displayed. Its default value is "true," meaning Firefox will close when the last tab is closed.

To alter this behavior, simply double-click on the browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab setting.

The Value will change to “false,” and the entire setting will appear in bold text, signifying that it’s no longer set to its default configuration.

Testing the New Configuration

Now, attempt to close the final open tab within Firefox.

Instead of closing the browser, Firefox will remain active, and the last tab will automatically reload, displaying the New Tab page.

Should you wish to revert to the original behavior, double-click the setting once more to restore the Value to "true".
