Controlling iMessage Read Receipts on a Per-Contact Basis

Typically, iMessage automatically transmits a read receipt to the message originator, informing them when a message has been viewed. This functionality can be disabled globally, however, a more nuanced approach is now available.

Users may desire to selectively disable read receipts, granting some contacts visibility while withholding it from others. This allows for greater control over communication and privacy.

Selective Read Receipt Management in iOS 10 and Later

Introduced in iOS 10, the ability to manage read receipts on a conversation-by-conversation basis provides this desired flexibility. For instance, if you prefer not to disclose your message-reading activity to a specific individual, such as a mother-in-law, this feature allows you to do so.

The read receipt setting within an individual conversation takes precedence over the global setting configured in the iPhone’s main settings. Therefore, to implement selective control, ensure the global Send Read Receipts option is enabled first.

To disable read receipts for a particular contact, begin by opening the message thread with that person.

Accessing and Modifying Conversation Settings

Locate and tap the “i” icon, situated in the upper-right corner of the screen within the conversation view.

The Send Read Receipts toggle will appear green when activated. Simply tap this toggle to deactivate the feature for that specific contact.

Confirm your selection by tapping “Done” in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Maintaining Communication Control

With this configuration in place, you can effectively manage your digital interactions. You now have the option to remain seemingly unaware of messages from certain senders, providing a degree of control over response timing and communication flow.

This allows for a strategic approach to messaging, enabling you to address communications at your own discretion.
