Android 5.0 Lollipop: Enhancing Security with Screen Pinning

The rollout of Android 5.0 Lollipop continues, bringing with it a range of new functionalities. Among these, the screen pinning feature stands out as a valuable tool for bolstering device security.

This feature effectively transforms your device into a limited-access kiosk, restricting the user to a single application. Consider the experience of using a tablet menu at a restaurant; access is confined solely to the menu application.

How Screen Pinning Works

Screen pinning offers a convenient way to control app access. For instance, you could allow a child to enjoy a Netflix cartoon without granting them access to other applications on your phone.

To activate screen pinning, navigate to the security settings within Android Lollipop. Begin by swiping down from the top of the screen to reveal the notification panel.

Then, tap the grey bar displaying the date and time. This action will open the settings menu, where you can locate the "Settings" gear icon – positioned between the battery and user indicators.

Configuring Screen Pinning

Within the settings, select the "Security" option to access the security settings. Scroll down to the "Advanced" section and tap on "screen pinning."

Enable screen pinning by toggling the slider located in the upper-right corner of the screen. It's recommended to review the information provided regarding how screen pinning operates.

Pinning and Unpinning an Application

First, launch the application you wish to pin. Next, tap the Overview button – the square navigation button at the bottom of the screen.

With the overview displayed, drag the current application upwards until the green pin icon appears in the lower-right corner.

Tapping this icon will prompt a confirmation dialog regarding your intention to use screen pinning. To unpin the screen, simultaneously press and hold the "Back" and "Overview" buttons.

Additional Security Measures

If your device is secured with a screen lock – such as a PIN or pattern – you can enable an extra layer of protection. Check the box labeled "ask for [UNLOCK] before unpinning."

This setting requires users to unlock the device before unpinning the screen, further safeguarding your data. Maintaining a screen lock is always advisable.

Protecting Your Device and Gathering Feedback

Screen pinning is particularly useful when lending your phone or tablet to children or friends, preventing unintended changes to your device settings.
