Move Emails Between Inbox Tabs in Gmail - A Simple Guide

Organizing Your Gmail Inbox with Tabs

Gmail’s tabbed inbox provides a convenient method for categorizing your emails. However, the process of adjusting which emails land in specific categories isn’t always straightforward.

The Introduction of Tabbed Inbox

Google initially launched the tabbed inbox feature in 2013. This update presented users with a reorganized inbox where incoming emails were automatically sorted into default categories such as "Primary", "Social", and "Promotions". While generally effective, occasional miscategorization of emails can occur.

It’s important to note that inbox tabs differ from Gmail labels. There are no filter options available directly for the inbox tabs, and they aren’t governed by the standard Gmail label system.

Moving Emails Between Tabs

Despite the lack of traditional filtering, you can manually re-sort emails between tabs using the Gmail web interface. This functionality is not available on mobile applications.

The method is surprisingly simple: simply drag and drop the desired emails to the appropriate tab. This may seem self-evident, but it’s a feature many users are unaware of.

You can move emails individually or in groups. To move multiple emails, select them by checking the box next to each one, then drag the entire selection.

Step-by-Step Guide

Locate the email or emails you want to recategorize within their current tab.

Click and hold on the email. Then, drag it towards the target tab where you want it to reside.

Release the mouse button to finalize the move, placing the email into the new category.

A notification will appear confirming the email has been moved. You can undo the action if necessary by clicking the "undo" option.

Automating Future Sorting

Following the move, a prompt will ask, "Do this for future messages from…?". Selecting "Yes" instructs Gmail to automatically sort all subsequent emails from that sender into the chosen tab.

A confirmation message will then display, stating, "Future messages from [address] will be moved to [new tab].".

Reversing the Sorting Process

If you need to revert a change, locate an email from the sender in the new tab. Repeat the drag-and-drop process, confirming that you want future messages delivered to the original tab selection.

By taking a few moments to adjust email categorization, you can significantly improve the organization and usability of your Gmail inbox.
