Migrating to the New Philips Hue Bridge and HomeKit Integration

Philips has unveiled a new Hue bridge, now featuring compatibility with Apple’s latest HomeKit framework. This article details the process of transferring your existing Hue bulbs to this updated system.

Transferring Your Existing Hue Bulbs

The migration process is straightforward. Begin by physically replacing your older bridge with the new model.

Ensure both bridges are connected to the same power source and network during the transfer. This facilitates a seamless transition of your lighting setup.

Leveraging HomeKit Integration

With the new Hue bridge, integration with Apple HomeKit is now possible. This allows for control of your Hue bulbs via the Home app and Siri voice commands.

To enable HomeKit, open the Philips Hue app and follow the on-screen instructions to pair the bridge with your Apple account.

Benefits of HomeKit Compatibility

  • Voice Control: Manage your lights using Siri.
  • Automation: Create scenes and automations within the Home app.
  • Unified Smart Home: Integrate your Hue bulbs with other HomeKit-enabled devices.

The new Philips Hue bridge expands the functionality of your smart lighting system. It provides a more connected and versatile experience, particularly for users within the Apple ecosystem.

Successfully migrating your bulbs and enabling HomeKit unlocks a new level of convenience and control over your home lighting.

Why and How to Migrate to the New Philips Hue Bridge

This discussion is related to a review of the Philips Hue Lux, highlighting user-friendly smart bulbs for contemporary homes.

The primary motivation for the development of the new Hue bridge is to incorporate compatibility with Apple’s HomeKit system for home management and automation. If you do not utilize iOS or have no interest in HomeKit, upgrading to the newer bridge offers limited benefit.

The previous bridge continues to function effectively, even supporting both the newer Hue Lux bulbs and the most recent Hue bulb and product updates released concurrently with the updated bridge. Essentially, the new bridge is only necessary for those seeking Apple HomeKit integration.

Currently, the new bridge can be obtained in two ways. An immediate purchase option is a new Hue starter kit, priced at $199. As of this guide’s publication, this is the sole source for acquiring the bridge.

However, this kit also includes three additional, newer Hue bulbs that offer enhanced brightness and more precise color rendering compared to older models. Once supply stabilizes, Philips intends to offer the Hue Bridge 2.0 as a standalone purchase for $59.

Furthermore, existing Hue users will be able to utilize the unique identifier of their Hue Bridge 1.0 to obtain a coupon for a 33 percent discount on the upgrade to a Bridge 2.0, reducing the cost to $40. This promotional offer will become available starting November 1st.

While migrating to the new bridge isn’t overly complex, the upgrade process isn’t entirely straightforward and contains potential issues to avoid. Let’s proceed with the upgrade instructions.

Migrating from Philips Hue Bridge 1.0 to Bridge 2.0

Transitioning between the initial Hue Bridge version and the newer model is generally straightforward. However, upon unpacking a new Hue starter kit or replacement bridge, immediate instructions may not be readily apparent. A migration wizard is available, but it only appears after connecting the new bridge and launching the Hue app – requiring a specific sequence of actions. Let's ensure you follow the correct order to prevent any complications.

Prior to proceeding, a small preparatory step is recommended. Verify that all your existing Hue (or Hue-compatible) bulbs are currently online and functioning throughout your home. Extensive testing has revealed that the transition is most successful when all bulbs are “live,” even if they aren’t actively in use.

Adding the New Bridge

Begin by unboxing your new bridge, connecting it to your router using the provided Ethernet cable, and then plugging in the power adapter. It’s crucial to leave your original Bridge 1.0 connected to the network and powered on at this stage.

With the new bridge networked and powered, open the Philips Hue application on your iOS device. Navigate to the Settings menu, accessible via the menu button in the upper left corner.

Within the Settings menu, note the ID number associated with your current bridge (located under the “My Bridge” entry). Then, select “Find Bridge.” In the subsequent screen, tap “Search” to discover your new Philips Hue Bridge 2.0 on the network.

Upon detection, you’ll be presented with a list of available bridges. As illustrated, multiple entries may appear, including the physical bridge and a virtual “my Hue” entry utilizing the same hardware. Select the entry beginning with “21” (representing the ID of the new physical bridge). Your specific ID numbers will differ, but selecting the new device’s ID is paramount.

Initiating the Bridge Transfer

After successfully adding the new bridge, initiate the transfer process by navigating to Settings, then “My Bridge.”

This action will launch the transfer wizard, which, unlike the process of accessing it, is relatively intuitive.

Select “Prepare transfer” and carefully follow the on-screen prompts. You will be instructed to press the link button on both your old and new bridges.

Once communication is established between the two bridges – indicated by a green checkmark and the message “Ready to transfer” – press “Start transfer.” Your existing bulbs will then be transferred to the new bridge. A confirmation message will appear upon successful completion, along with an option to blink all your lights as a visual confirmation of their addition to the new control bridge.

The final step involves resetting your old Hue bridge – the one being replaced – by pressing the physical reset button on the back of the unit with a pen tip or paperclip. After resetting, disconnect the old bridge from power.

Now, review your scenes and settings to confirm a complete and successful transfer. If a bulb fails to transfer (this is most common with third-party bulbs), it may require re-pairing.

Connecting Your New Bridge to Siri/HomeKit

While this guide primarily focuses on migrating bulbs to the new bridge, a key reason for upgrading is often to enable Siri and HomeKit integration.

You can find the Siri/HomeKit setup within the Hue app under Settings –> Siri Voice Control. The app provides guidance, but a seamless experience requires understanding certain nuances.

For a more detailed exploration, refer to our previous article on using Siri to control your lights. Despite the occasional rough edges, voice-controlled home automation offers a satisfying glimpse into the future, making commands like “Hey Siri, turn off the lights” remarkably convenient.
