Hide, Recover & Delete Photos: A Complete Apple Photos Guide

Recovering Deleted Photos in Apple Photos
Apple's Photos application provides a centralized location for managing both photos and videos across your Apple devices, functioning seamlessly on both OS X and iOS. Synchronization of your media is achieved through iCloud integration.
Even after deleting a photo within the Photos app, it isn't immediately and permanently removed. This offers a safety net for accidental deletions.
The Photos App: A Comprehensive Tool
Since its initial release, Photos has been a well-regarded default photo management solution for users of iOS and OS X. It caters to the needs of the majority of users, particularly those who don't require the advanced features of professional software like Photoshop.
The application facilitates direct photo editing and enables the swift creation of various projects, including photo books, greeting cards, and dynamic slideshows.
Understanding the Recovery Timeline
When a photo is deleted in Photos, it's initially moved to a "Recently Deleted" album rather than being permanently erased. This album acts as a temporary holding space.
Photos remain within the "Recently Deleted" album for a period of thirty days. After this timeframe, they are automatically and permanently deleted from your system.
Recovering or Permanently Deleting Photos
During the thirty-day window, you have the ability to either restore a deleted photo back to your library or expedite its permanent removal. This provides control over your photo collection.
Hiding Photos as an Alternative
Beyond deletion, Apple Photos also offers the functionality to hide photos. This feature provides a different approach to managing visibility within the app, which we will briefly discuss.
This allows users to conceal images without permanently removing them from their library.
Photos for iOS
Users of the Photos application on iOS devices can locate the "Albums" button situated at the bottom of the screen. Subsequently, selecting the "Recently Deleted" album is necessary.
The "Select" button, found in the top-right corner, allows for the selection of multiple photographs simultaneously.
When multiple photos are chosen, two additional options become available in the upper-left corner. These options are "Delete All" and "Recover All".
Selecting a single photo reveals a "Delete" button in the bottom-left corner, initiating a permanent removal. Crucially, a "Recover" button is also present in the bottom-right corner.
Returning to the camera roll or albums, a long press on any photo will display options to either "Copy" or "Hide" the selected image.
These hidden photos can be revisited within the "Albums" section by tapping on the "Hidden" album.
Within the Hidden album, a long press on any photo allows for its unhiding.
Now, let us consider the functionality within the Photos application for OS X.
Photos for OS X
By default, the Photos application on OS X does not display the Recently Deleted album. Access to this album requires initial enablement within the application’s settings.

To reveal the album, navigate to the “File” menu and select the “Show Recently Deleted” option.

Selecting multiple images within OS X is streamlined. Users can utilize the mouse for individual clicks, employ a lasso selection, or leverage the “Command” key to choose specific photos.

Two buttons are prominently displayed in the upper-right corner, providing options to either “Recover” selected items or “Delete” a specified number of images.
Hiding Photos
To conceal photos, first select the desired images. Then, right-click within the album to access the “Hide” option in the contextual menu.

A dialog box will appear, notifying the user that the Hidden album must be enabled to view the concealed photos.

To display the Hidden album, access the “View” menu and select “Show Hidden Photo Album”.

The Hidden album will then become visible within the Album view of the Photos application.

Within the Hidden album, select the desired items, right-click, and choose the “Unhide” option to restore them.

The application provides a convenient recovery option for accidentally deleted photos. Furthermore, permanent deletion is available for images you wish to remove entirely.
Hiding photos offers a method to temporarily remove images from view without permanent deletion. This is ideal for photos you wish to retain but exclude from your regular photo stream.
