How To Get the most out of OpenDNS

Unlocking the Full Potential of OpenDNS
MakeUseOf has previously highlighted OpenDNS, however, my understanding of its capabilities was limited until recently. While it was noted that utilizing OpenDNS’s DNS servers, rather than those provided by your Internet Service Provider, could potentially enhance internet speed, the extent of its functionality remained unclear. OpenDNS offers a range of features beyond simple speed improvements.
Let's examine the comprehensive feature set offered by OpenDNS. It’s remarkably extensive, providing a suite of DNS-related tools designed to bolster network security, enable customization, and offer robust protection.
Account Creation and Feature Access
The initial step involves creating an account. This can be accomplished by navigating to the OpenDNS website and selecting the "Create Account" link located at the top of the page. Account creation grants access to a variety of features, including:
- Blocking of adult content
- Domain blocking capabilities
- A domain whitelist function
- Phishing website detection
- Detailed usage statistics
After logging in, OpenDNS automatically configures a network based on your detected IP address. From there, you can easily access "Settings" to begin customizing your OpenDNS experience.
Personalization can begin with uploading a custom logo. This logo will be displayed on the error pages generated by OpenDNS. Consider using a prominent visual indicator, such as a large red 'X', or even a personalized image.
Key Features Explained
Whitelist - This feature provides the ability to permanently authorize access to specific websites. These designated sites will remain unaffected by any other configured settings.
Adult Site Blocking - This setting is categorized into six distinct levels. It allows for granular control, enabling you to select the specific categories you wish to include in your block list, with an additional option for blocking proxy and anonymizer sites. Simply choose the desired categories and apply the settings; OpenDNS will handle the rest, displaying a customized error message when a blocked site is accessed.
Phishing Site Blocking - This function leverages data from PhishTank to actively prevent computers utilizing OpenDNS’s DNS servers from accessing potentially malicious phishing websites.
Domain Blocking (Blacklist) - This option allows for the blocking of individual websites. For example, if you wish to restrict access to a particular site for children or other users, simply add the domain to the block list, and it will become inaccessible.
A significant advantage of these features is the ability to customize the error messages or informational messages displayed to users attempting to access blocked websites.
OpenDNS Shortcuts: A Productivity Booster
Shortcuts - This is arguably one of the most valuable features available to OpenDNS users.
The shortcuts functionality enables the creation of concise, single-word shortcuts that redirect to specific URLs. If you frequently visit a number of websites on a daily basis, this feature can significantly streamline your browsing experience. Assign simple, one-word shortcuts to your most-visited sites. As a frequent Gmail user, I have configured the shortcut "mail" to direct me to https://mail.google.com. Typing "mail" into the address bar instantly takes me to Gmail.
